Another "What's it worth" Thread
I'm not interested in selling right now, but I'm trying to get some more input on a realistic value for my car. Long story short, is that the soon-to-be-ex is claiming entitlement to equity in the car, and I'm trying to get a better estimate (not just what I say) of the equity if I were to sell it. Any case, details...
93 Touring, Montego Blue resprayed to "emerald green". Currently 96,xxx miles.
Interior has some blemishes, but overall good condition. The pocket in the driver's door doesn't keep the lid on. Shifter **** is missing the leather cover.
Exterior is so-so. Paint is about a 6-7/10. Both door lock tumblers need to be re-keyed and don't work. The aftermarket alarm/keyless entry is also not functional, so it can't reasonably be locked. The gas cap door is broken at the curved arm, but functional because it's been screwed together with steel plates on the inside (I know it's ghetto, I didn't do it).
Engine is pretty decent. Rebuilt at 70k miles with documentation. Full replacement of hoses with silicone and *forget the member's name* check valves. The exhaust is leaking, I believe, at the downpipe, but not badly. The rest of the exhaust, including cats, is stock. There are pinholes in the muffler, and both exhaust tips have rusted off.
Transmission blew the 5th synchro, so it currently doesn't have a functional 5th gear or reverse. It's a pain in the ***, really, but fun on the highway cause you can use the excuse "I don't HAVE 5th!" and enjoy the quicker boost and acceleration.
I think that's the long and short of it. The car is currently being stored in a barn in PA until I can get around to making the repairs. My estimate of street value on the vehicle would be in the $4000-5000 range. Pics are below, but outdated.

I can't seen this car being worth more than $865.34.
I would take the KBB 'fair' value and get a mechanic's estimate to repair all outstanding items and subtract that from the value.

That sucks that your ex-****-of-a-wife is actually asking about the value of your FD. Is it registered in your name? Then ***** her with a big phat bick! Get her drunk off her ***, and take some sleazy photos and post them all over the internet.
But yah, like the other guy said, take KBB value and subtract estimate of repairs.

Minuses: Color is un-desirable, the fact that it is a 1993 is less than ideal, and miles are high, and it needs some things fixed.
Pluses: Engine is new-ish, body appears to be in good shape.
$9-11k
I'd buy 10 of 'em at $4-5k

In your case you're trying to get the lowest value possible for the car that will stand up to reasonable scrutiny. (Your wife's lawyer may try to establish a higher value.)
So, you need to present some good evidence for the low ball value. I would not rely on any of the price guides in this case as they are likely to show a higher value for your car. Take it to a used car dealer, or even your local Mazda dealer.
Ask them what they would give you in cash value for the car if you sold it to them.
Have them write it down and sign it. Who's going to dispute that? It's the best evidence going. Let your wife's lawyer try to establish a higher value. He'd have to rely on a price guide, in which case you say the price guide hasn't "seen" the car and is not the opinion of a business professional who deals with this kind of thing day in and day out.

Pre Nups don't help when you're just out of college and have nothing at the time of the marriage. We picked up the car when we were already married, but I titled, insured, and got the loan in my name only so she couldn't touch it. Strangely enough, that doesn't matter. Any case, the estimate on repairs taken from KBB would probably be a good option. The car isn't plated or insured right now, so I can't really drive it to a dealer, but I can at least have them work an estimate for repair/replacement.

And i swear my friend and i have never done such a think in our lives.
Maybe pull the map hose off, and say it has a blown motor and is only worth a couple grand as a roller. she won't know.
