Pretty much right, luckily i have my own business and make 35/hr. Should be behind the wheel again within a year. By the way, i am not at all trying to justify what i did, but the FD is a sports car, its meant to be driven fast, and i fully understand that there is a time and place for everything and i didnt choose the right time and place, but i am sure all of you have done the same thing, i guess i am just too inexperienced of a driver.

When i was 16, I paid 1700 a year for liability on a 79 chevy monza. Full coverage would have been 2400. I can see how It was only insured for liability. I could barely afford the 1700 back then. I wont even take out a loan for a new car now just because I have to have full coverage. Dont need it, dont want it, It's a ripoff.

IMO an FD is an excellent first car. What would you prefer you kids to drive, a pre 90's car with bad reliability, worn out suspension, and safety standards of the era? Or how about a newer compact/subcompact with inadequate power and handleing, namely hondas. **** even a yugo can go fast enough to go out of control, at a much lower speed than an FD to boot. There are other cars that are better firsts than the FD, like an FC if ya gotta have the rotor, but few offer the supeior handeling, braking, and plain damn coolness of an FD. When you were in high school did you drive the car you wanted? If not remember how you envied those who did.

The important thing here is that 1. he wasn't seriously injured, aside from pride. and 2. He learns from his mistakes. Every one has wreaks, (if you haven't, god smiles upon you, but for how long?). He obviously knows his mistake. Learn from it, prosper from it, and don't do it again.

I feel for ya homie, don't let it get ya down.

a few things, I am not gay at all and i agree with plan9, i love women, and i love cars, why not have them both???

Second of all, if i had been in any other car that did not absorb the impact like the FD did, i may be dead. That is a scary thing.

there is no such word as oversteered. The word "oversteer" is a noun and shouldn't used as a verb.
I have a feeling that you probably don't know what it means and perhaps that is what got you into trouble. You would benefit by reading some books on advanced driving(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...152348-0335107) and perhaps taking an advanced driving course before you get into another powerful car.

I suggest you start with some books. They are cheaper. But seat time is invaluable.

I really hate seeing threads like this. Not only does it mean 'another one bites the dust' , (and reasonably-priced parts will become harder to find), but it also increases the chances of insurance rates going up.

As they say, the best thing to do is 'fix the nut behind the wheel first.' It's good that you realize that you made a mistake, but now you need to learn exactly what you did wrong in order to prevent from making a similar mistake in the future.

Books to check out:
"Going Faster! Race Driving Techniques" by Skip Barber
"Drive To Win" by Caroll Shelby

And anything you can find by Bob Bondurant. I would advise you to buy a good 'trainer car' instead of another supercar. Get something that is light weight, well-balanced and underpowered. It will force you to learn how to drive well in order to go fast. Look into Miatas, AE86-chassis Toyota Corollas, maybe even a first-gen MR2.If you want to have something that is 'cooler' than that, maybe a Honda S2000 , but I wouldn't spend the extra money on it.

This will help you with driving technique only. Learning good judgement and responsible decision making is up to you. Most people lose their sense of invincibility after crashing a car, and will use better judgement in the future.

Good luck,
-s-

So Mad, do you recall what actually happened? About halfway through the corner, you saw the exit line you wanted, pointed the wheel and shoved the throttle, yes?

Turbo lag meets limits of slip angle = loop-di-loop.

Next time, SLOW squeeze of throttle, especially at or after apex UNLESS you have room to look at weeds.

Now a nice kick of the throttle before the suspension fully sets makes for a bit of fun, but harder with less linear torque application (i.e turbo lag, even with twins...)...

I'm sorry you went through this. It is very upsetting to trash something so sublime....

How did this become a bashing fest. Where are the pics? Are you going to part it or what? I am not going to bash you, its unfortunate but this stuff happens, do a search and you will see. We all know this so lets move on. I am sure that if you realy loved your FD you will get another or fix the one you have.

FD an excellent first car? Heck no! They are almost unsafe to drive in anything other than dry conditions. In the rain in 5th gear at 70 mph an hour you can roll on the gas about half throttle and spin the rear tires. And because it is limited slip, both spin and send the back end quickly to the left or the right. You can break any speed limit in America in about 7 seconds from a standing start. And look at the size of the car compared to am SUV. Any head on collision with one would have horrendous results for the occupants.

I would be more vary of the FDs suspension then almost any car out there on the road. The suspensions are made of aluminum with the ball joint pressed into them. The ball portion of the ball joint actually make contact with the aluminum. When my suspension failed, the ball joint ripped through the lower control arm, the suspension then collapsed, and the car wouldn't turn. Luckily I was going 20 mph. I have never heard of that happening on another car because other cars use steel instead aluminum. Steel gives more warning if it is going to fail. My suspension never made a noise.

Why is front wheel drive so much better for beginners? Understeer saves lives. Go to fast around the corner in your Honda, and the car will push. So you let of the gas and it comes back in line. Go around the corner in your FD too fast, the rear end steps out. Panic, you swing of the gas, weight transfers foward, and the car is now spinning backwards and completely out of control.

Good first car is a Volvo. It is heavy, safe, and underpowered. I would take any late 80s volvo in a crash over an FD.

This is very true but how does a volvo prepare you to drive a FD ? You can drive a camry all your life but once you step into a fd its a totally different story you no longer have understeer and power is just overwhelming. A good first car is a na rwd car. I owend 3 b4 I owned my fd and drove them for about 1/2 year and drove a camry for 3 years. Nothing prepares you to drive a fd besides driving a fd . The only thing that steps close to a fd is a t2 but the suspension responds different along with the power band acts different. In conclusion there is no substitute to train you for a fd 1) because it acts like no other car 2) power band is insane 3) steering is point and go unlike what you learn with other cars is compensate but with the fd once you point it , it goes there.

You guys stress there is no car out there like the FD ... And honestly its the truth. Hop in the fd and learn yourself. Thats what it is down to.

Exactly. The last thing a new driver needs is a powerful car with neutral handling. An big underpowered understeering pig is the ideal first car.

One in four sixteen-year-olds is involved in an accident in their first year of driving - the last thing they need is oversteer or power.
