aluminum catch can

why is everyone paying 150 bucks for aluminum catch cans when you can get them for 62 bucks?

Nascar stuff rules As long as you don't actually have to drive the nascar

An aluminum catch can would be for oil and not the radiator. I've never heard of anyone replacing their plastic overflow tank with a metal one either. Maybe you are thinking of the aluminum AST?

Hrm, very interesting. This looks like it would work, too -- given that you get the right fittings. Also, would it need a vented radiator cap or would a standard pressurized on work fine?

Looks to me it uses the standard cap with the spring, so it would work. Probably doesn't have "bubble baffling" inside, but I doubt that would matter, as I don't think the Pettit or the others I've seen have either. Darn, paid too much ;-(.

It's just the shape of the can on the stock unit - supposed to ensure no bubbles get back into the cooling system. If I were designing a replacement, I might be tempted to put in a baffle to reduce air passage back into the cooling system - over under type of passage.

The question you need to ask is what is the preasure of the cap.

it doesn't come with a cap. you put on whatever one you want.

being from a "standard" nascar shop, I can almost guarantee you can go to any parts store and pick up any number of caps that will fit it at what ever pressure you want...in the 5-6 dollar range.

I've got one on the way.

It looks like it would fit but what are the build qualities spefically the welds? It would be interesting to setup and check but I wouldn't want to take the chance with an 'may fit' AST. I hate to lose coolant!

I'm excited to hear the results -- do let us know which fittings/cap to get.

Also, this is a question for everyone... why do the ASTs that the stores sell always have a pressure relief cap?

Nice. I've always wondered why people were willing to pay so much for those AL ASts. Look at what they are. There is no reason they should be that expensive. I got a used one cheap, but I remember that there were a few items in Jegs and Summit that I was considering adapting for AST use instead.
