Exclamation Alternator Voltage ?`

well i have just recently replaced my alternator. starts up and jumps from 14.2 - 14.8 . idles for about a good 15 minutes and its jumps from 14.8 - 15.1 . so another 10 minutes it would jump up from 15.0-15.2 .... well what i wanted to know if the alternator is overcharging or is it normal that the power voltage is reading 15.0 +.this is at idle with ac on. what are the normal voltage ?

i would say the best way to be sure would be take it off and take it to the local auto parts store.

have them test it to see.
i dont think it should jump that high..

No, it shouldn't be that high. Sounds like a rectifier pack is defective. But yes, have it checked out by an auto parts store or alternator shop for sure.

I would think the regulator more than the rectifier pack. Either way it's not working properly and needs to be replaced or repaired.

and i forgot to mention that it did have the problem before i installed the alternator ...

my alternater went bad prolly dued to this reason .. thats why i had to replace it with an used alt... i had never paid attention to the voltage before it went out so i have no idea why its overcharging or so ... i have edit the old alt and you can see the ground has rusted area, also melted the blk L peice! the gray cover had melted all the way so i have no idea ... my pigtail was cut so i did the wires for temp .. ..

Just to let you know if you continue to run this alternator, should the rectifier pack fail as well as the regulator other electronics won't be far behind it. I. E. ECU and other items that prefer an 11 to 14vdc supply.

You really need to properly fix the wiring (if you haven't already done so). The alternator needs solid electrical connections to regulate the voltage. Are you seeing the exact same voltage at the battery as at the alternator?

Way too high. Contact Goodfellafd3s for a rebuilt one. You WILL eventually start frying harnesses and components driving like that. Like someone said, it is most likely the voltage regulator.

i am getting this from my commander - bat. volt. - and as for my pigtail i will get that installed tomorrow ....

i have purchased an used low miles alternator from FRITZ here off the forums so im assuming the alternator is still good ... but i guess its still having the same problem that i had with my old one that i didnt know of until my car was totally dead ...

yea i might have to get that check out since alot of ppl mention the regulator .. well i only drove it for 15 mins through out the day so no more driving until its fixed ...

Did you verify with a voltmeter? It might actually be even higher. There's a plug in the back that goes to the voltage regulator. If the connection is bad, the wires are bad, etc. then that could also cause the problem, I think.

If you need to drive it a short distance to a shop to get it fixed, etc., I wouldn't worry. Crank up some electrical devices to keep the voltage down. Really the electronics are rated up to ~15V. A completely bad regulator can make it put out 18V or more, that's when you worry.

Keep your warranty info when you get a new alternator. They're a gamble. It might last years or a few weeks.
