alternator upgrade
I am debating weather to rebuild my stock alternator or snap my piggy banks neck and get a 140amp upgrade.
My question is... how many of you have a 140amp (or more) upgrade and how big of a difference did it make on your car.

My question is. Why do you need a 140amp (or more) upgrade?
If you want to lug around a bunch of stereo equipment why don't you just buy a SUV?
It seams the stock alternator charges the battery just fine, so stuffing more amps into it isn't going to do anything.
You're good then. The stock FD alternator is MORE than enough for the FD with some basic add-on electronics.
I'd just get your alternator rebuilt or find a good, cheap low-mileage one.

My 140 amp upgrade makes a significant difference on modified cars. If you are running several gauges, stereo, larger fuel pumps, etc I have found the stock 90 amp alternator to fall short. Typical symptoms are slow moving wipers, windows that are slow to roll up, dimming headlights at idle, fuel pressure falling off, failing batteries, etc. Remember many people install underdrive pulleys so you are already reducing the output of the stock alternator. The electrical systems in these cars are already marginal. I have both stock rebuilds and upgrades.

You can send him your broken unit as a core exchange for the new unit. His cost is around $180 if I recall correctly.

And it is not the total amps of the unit that are important, it's the amps at idle that will kill you. The stock unit produces around 60 amps at idle and if you have done any serious mods, then you'll eat this up pretty quickly. For example, the popular fuel pump mod runs your pump at full voltage, even at idle, and this will consume 11 amps per fuel pump. Throw in your headlights, AC, fans, etc. and you will surpass the 60 amp limit.
With all the stuff on my 20B FD, I had to go with an alternator that puts out 120 amps at idle and it fixed my low voltage at idle problems.
How many wires does the stock alternator use? I was thinking about switching to a domestic (read Ford or Chevy) alternator to avoid the 15 year old import car tax. Thoughts?
