Alternator over charging... need fix
I was driving a little agressive during the night but when I was getting to my friends house I noticed that my add oil light and add coolent light flased on when I went above 2.5k. So I noticed that they flased on when I hit 15.9 volts which is way to high. I drove back home at 2k to keep it at a 13/14 volts. Anywhere I could look for problems. Thanks. This is my first alternator problem.

I was also wondering why add oil and add coolent lights up... Can you explain that, did it happen to you? And so there is nothing else that will cause me to hit 15.9 volts. And it only hits it around 2500 rpms. I dont get it. If it is the alternator i'll have no problem going to buy a new one, I just dont want to buy something then figure its a diffrent thing. Thanks again. The ldash light question is because I am not sure why those lights will turn on.

i don't know why those lights turn on when the alt. goes bad. when i had trouble with mine they also turned on but my trouble was that the alt. was not charging the full 13.5-14v aprox. it was only putting out 8v. the wierd thing is the battery charge light on de panel never went on. i found out on the PFC commander.

Changing the alternator should solve your problem. You will also want to double check any and all your rounding points. These cars will do weird things when the voltage goes hay wire. If oyu have this problem in the future try turning on different loads (headlight, rear window defroster, climate control fans, AC.....by turning on all these items it will load down the alternator and keep the voltage lower than 15vdc and may or may not cause the voltage regulator to fail completely.

My car did the same thing with the lights. I cut it off and started it back up and it was gone. I would notice that for a while under boost the voltage would get up to around 15 and the lights would want to flash on, after about a week it just stopped do it. Where would the best place be to buy a new alternator. I see that advance offers two on the web with life time replacement, but the price is $100.00 apart from each other??????

I got mine rebuilt at an Alternator/Starter place, cost me 160 Canadian. Same thing happened to me, all dash lights started to light up, put a tester on it at idle, was getting around 16.5V, then I gave her a little gas to like 2000rpm and got up to over 20V. So I pulled it right there on the side of the road, (yes I have a voltage tester in the car and basic tools like 10,12, 14mm wrenches in a small pouch) called the girlfriend and got it rebuilt. New diodes, new voltage regulator, new bearings, new brushes. Don't do it yourself, Mazda wants too much for the voltage regulator and parts. I'm not sure how the guy rebuilds them for that much but, he probably gets the replacement parts for a good price. Good luck.
