Alternator Belt

ok. working on the R1 AGAIN and WHY the fark cant i get my alternator belt back on?!! the engine lift mount is in the way of the alternator sinking any further. and my boy wasnt to remove the alternator and the lift mount but i def dont wanna do that mazda wouldnt make it so that it had to be removed. so, HOW DO I GET THIS DAMN BELT ON!? its on the air pump on the crank and on the lil scondary pulley BUT I CANT GET IT ON THE ALTERNATOR has about 1 and a half inches to go. i tried putting it on the alt. and removing the air pump then reattaching the air pump but the belt wont flex enough. PLEASE HELP. i have to break in the new motor (another 500 miles) by prom (the 24th of may) PLEASE help. argh....

Well, typically one puts it on the air pump, the crank and the alt, then slides it over the water pump. But yours may be simply too tight even if you really push the belt. Another less fun way is to remove the water pump pully bolts, let the pully come off the locating stud on the front, thread the belt around the air pump, crank, alt, and water pump pully, then press down (toward earth) on the water pump pully with the belt threaded across it and get it to go over the water pump pully mounting wheel. This should work, but make sure before you push down on the pully that the holes will line up so you can put the bolts back in.

I had this problem too with my rebuilt engine. I got a new altermnator, and I think the newer water pump housings don't let the alt drop as far. I had to REALLY work to get that belt over the water pump pully after threading it over the air pump, crank and alt!!

Good luck!

Pineapple reccomends the first 350 miles you keep it under 3500 rpm with NO boost. You can spool it up to 0 psi to make sure the primary is turning over at all, but if you don't have a boost gauge, just use gentle trailing throttle all the time and keep it under 3500. Change the oil at 350 miles. Then you can open it up to 4500 until 1200 miles or so. Change the oil again, and have at it!!

Others say get into it right away, that any damage from a bad rebuild shows up first time you start it, and after that there is no seating of components to worry about like piston engines. Personally, I'll stick with what Pineapple says, as they rebuilt my engine and are giving a 5 year warrantee, and I'll follow their suggestions to keep the warantee "valid". Of course, no written warantee exists, so it could all just be bullshit!!

Keeping out of the throttle all the time is HARD to do. Short shifting all the time, and with sooo many ricers around = difficult

New motor gods require blood sacrifice to allow a project to work correctly, and NO project runs before 9 pm, local time!!

Might chew up the belt in the long run. I broke mine taking it off, and got another from Malloy Mazda for $65. Looks real purty sitting there.

You line up everthing for the alt belt and you may find that the belt looks too short but in reality if its the right belt its just right. With everything lined up you can get the belt around the alt pulley so you put the belt onto the alt pulley and you want to hold it there and then crank the motor or the alt pulley clockwise. As you turn the motor or the pulley the belt will spin onto the ribs of the alt pulley. This method is usually refer to as "cranking on the belt". Make sure you hand is ontop of the belt and not inbetween the belt and the pulley if it is it might crush you finger. If you have a air gun you can take off the alt pulley, put the belt onto the pulley and then install the pulley onto the alt. By the way there is a slight adjustment on the airpump which might give you engouh adjustment to slip on the belt.
