all in one info meter for the FD

hey guys

i been looking around and i havent really been able to find a solid answer on this

i'm looking for an all in one info meter for my car because if possible i'd like to not use gauges on my dash

i've seen a few such as the HKS Camp and Camp2 units

the Blitz R-Vit

and the Greddy Informeter

but what i'm wondering is that all of these plug in with the OBD port but they all say that you can put in your own sensors...so can these systems work without being plugged into the OBD?

i want to use the Camp system from HKS or the Blitz R-Vit, because they plug into my screen in the dash and it'll all look really clean

anyone know??

I have a AIMS data logger in my RX-8. You can also go with a Motec data logger. The look is way more official and looks way better than any gauge IMO. They are pretty expensive though...

There are newer ones on the market. Google for multi function dash or multi function display for other players.

This is one I recently stumbled upon:

Even those OBD II logger apps are still limited by the approximately 5 samples per second data rate that most cars have when using the universal protocol.

CA For the guy who wants everything...

c'sfinest,

You already have a Power FC, so you could just use the Commander. It's easy to switch between all the car's vitals, and you can have 1, 2, 4, or 8 parameters displayed, with peak hold.

Or if you're willing to spend the money, modify your cluster face slightly, and perform a little wire-splicing, this one in particular is my "dream cluster" :

http://www.stackltd.com/st8100.html ...The site pics don't do this thing justice. In person, and especially lit up, this thing is pretty badass.

lol i think i should be a lil more specific...i'm not looking to change my dash in anyway...

its a bit wierd but i'm looking to do something different than most other FDs while not trying to change my interior in anyway

basically i want my interior to be bone stock with the exception of Bride Low Max seats, a different shift ****, and a different head unit

I have a double din head unit already, so i want to put an info meter that will tell me my vitals without using actual gauges...so boost, water temp, egt, fuel press, etc...

so basically want it on the head unit so that i dont have to mount anything up on my dash or pillars with the exception of possibly that Ark design info meter that gracer suggested...i think im gona put the boost controller in the glove box also to hide that

Aimsports MXL series in conjunction with an ecu that speaks its language is what I'd go for.

You can use the hks camp 1 and 2 without having an obdII port, having the port just makes it plug and play. You would need to buy each additional sensor through HKS or an HKS dealer along with the camp, when you start adding the prices up it can be costly.

If you're willing to live with ONE gauge, PLX stuff is nice.

I put a lot of thought into this prior to going with 2 PLX gauges which together show 8 parameters. If they would just build those with a video output so I could plug it into the double din head unit.

What you may want to consider is a carputer. Or even if you just have an old laptop it would work. You would obviously need a stand alone EMS, but the HKS Camp with all of its components can easily cost that much.

The front page of many stand alones shows tons of data (temps, rpms, boost, ait, injector duty cycles, etc...), there are many DIY's out there on carputers, and they can be done pretty cheaply, and even if you just use an old laptop under your seat or soemthing, you can use the s-video out and convert it to RCA video and plug right into a video input on your double din head unit. And there you go, every parameter you need. You can do it this way for about the same cost as a CAMP unit and all of its accessories. You can even find used homemade carputers on higher end car forums for sale pretty cheap (I've seen a few go for $500 on G35driver).

Installing a stand alone may be overkill for the mods you have, but it might work for you.

Looking back, I kind of regret not doing this.

Sounds like you've already got your mind made up. The DashDAQ is somewhat similar to what you're describing and its supported locally.

dashdaq is really nice, you can also get it with optional GPS, and as stated it can communicate with certain standalones.

I was saying the other day how someone needs to come out with a double din unit that will be a radio, GPS, and monitor your engine either through OBDII ports or control box, throw a radar in that thing and I would gladly pay $1000-$1300 for it.
I am lazy and prefer not to build a car computer for $23 and some solder, I would rather just buy something that is somewhat supported.

Oh ok, well AIMS/Motec are way cleaner than anything but they do give off the race feel. Whatever flows your cash, lol? Good luck anyways with your decision.
