air sheilds work

hey everyone, i made a pair of airsheilds to funnel the air into my radiator just to see if it would work and it turns out that they dropped my temp by 10-15 degrees. i also took out my ac condensor too and im sure that helped too. i have not taken it out on the highway yet and cruised at a higher rate then 40mph. ill keep you all updated on what the results are. by the way, i use to run 200 degrees F. but now im running at 185-190 degrees F. It was nearly so I say its a good mod to do. forgot to mention that the ambiante temp is about 70-80 degrees.

I am sorry but I don't really see it
If it helps with keeping the temp down then that is great. I have a fluidyne and I was running about 166 for the longest time last night but then i started running her hard and it jumped up to around 190-195.

yeah the photos are kinda crappy cuz i just snapped them at night really quickly with night vision camcorder, basically its just 2 metal plates on either side of the radiator. btw, how cold is it where you live and do you have a stock thermostat? 166 is the coolest i have ever heard of a fd running. Also, when you run at 166 degrees, does your computer stay in startup mode or do you have a aftermarket computer/ecu?

it was very cool here, umm....like 40-50 outside. I have pettit ecu, fans are just about always on and I was just cruising around at about 40mph for a while and that was the temp reading for about 20 min then I started taking some back roads and trying out my new suspesion

Are your shields attached to the undertray? Anyway, someone did a shield that is attached to the undertray and forces all the air into the radiator by putting some alum pieces on the sides of the undertray - similar to what you've done. I imagine that it would work pretty well but would the engine bay and stock mount intercool get hotter bc none of the colder air enters behind the radiator?

FDs don't overheat in 35+ mph speeds and that's when the shield would be particularly effective. So, I don't know if it's worth it. However, if you are seeing temp drop and it's not making the car too cold, it's worth checking it out!!

My FD was running somewhat hot (although not much hotter than most of the FDs that I have seen/felt). I had the thermostat replaced w/ a new stock one and it's running almost too cold! I drove about 5 miles in 45 degree weather and the hood is not even warm! I'll have to add some more coolant to enrich the antifreeze to water ratio. It's about 30 antifreeze/70 water. I don't want my car to stay in warm up mode or make it too cold so the internals are wearing out.

i attached the sheilds directly to the radiator to get more air thru the radiator. i saw the other guy's air sheild that you were mentioning and was gonna post up that photo too but it seems the problem with that one is that alot of air is still allowed to flow around the radiator (thats where i got the idea in the first place). the intercooler i have is a aftermarket smic and for that i used little fins to extend the stock air intake by an inch and that has seemed to work too, after the initial run in my car, i jumped out the touch the intercooler and indeed the intake half of the intercooler was warm but the output end was cold and after cruising for a bit while not on the boost both ends were cool again. (note that the output end is closer to the radiator!)
you guys r lucky you get such cold weather, here in hawaii if the temp drops to 65-70 degrees we grab our winter clothes. usually is about 80 degrees and above.

I donno, I think you are lucky for having 80 degree yr round... Actually, I think I would get sick of having 1 season.

With respect to the car, that's great that it's working out for you. If you are looking into ways to reduce temp, definitely consider replacing the thermostat too if it's still orig. Mine is running cold now! I guess the stock radiator isn't as worthless as I thought.
