Air Intake on the daily driver??

so if i'm experiencing boost spikes above 10 psi under WOT, i should either get an aftermarket ECU that can handle the increased pressure OR i should get a boost controller to keep the stock ECU happy. is this correct? because that's what i'm reading here. is there a particular boost controller that FD owners have had success with their stock ECU?
