No experience with burnt out fans.

Aftermarket fans... I used a Flex-a-Lite Black Magic fan.
It flows a lot of cfms. However, it didn't quite beat the cooling effect of the stock fan for an FC. I sacrificed the load effect from the stock fan for cooling efficiency when my water temps were a bit high (in Texas summer).

Great aftermarket fan though!

One of the motors on my first set burnt out, and this didn't help the overheating problems I was experiencing during SoCal summers, so I searched the forum for a while and bought a used set. Supposedly (and from my experience) the motors are exactly the same, so if you got a good motor to replace that which you blew out, you should be ok, assuming you can dissasemble and reassemble the whle thing wihtout destroying it, mine wasn't very motivated to do this. If you try to buy a set from Mazda, it will set you back several hundred dollars ( or at least thas what it was listed at), and I personally had no luck in just finding new motors for the bloody thing, turns out they are special three speed (if I recall correctly) motors, and are really complex when opened up. Good luck, try searching the parts for sale forum, thats where I found mine. Hope this helps, Josh

I called Ray at Malloy Mazda. You'll how much each fan motor will set you back. $177.95 each!!!
Need a better alternative to these stock fans. I know they work great, but the one time one of the or both of them fail, it might be too late.

I'm thinking of combatting my high temp issues in two ways.
1. After market vented hood.
2. Bolting on a black magic FAL electric fan between the greddy 2-row fmic and the vertically mounted koyo radiator.
What do ya'll think? Will the "pull" fan take precious cool air away from the fm?

SERIES7,

Vosko had a pretty nice aftermarket fan setup... I can't remember what it was, but you might try PMing him..

Vosko, if you read this thread, please also post your old set-up here so others may also benefit. BTW, I am very sorry to read about your accident.

I had a driver's side fan motor fail a while back, which I was told commonly occurs with that side, due to the battery's tendency to drip acid down in that area when hot. I replaced it with a new fan motor, since that way I know the motor is good, and brand new. Have not had a problem since, and haven't heard of reliability issues with them (other than the drivers side).

IMO, trying to beat the stock fan/motor setup is a waste of time and money. The stock fan flows better than the vast majority of aftermarket fan setups you'll be able to fit in there, and cost will be about the same, if not more, especially after you factor in the fabrication needed to make it work.

Stacking more fans on top of the radiator won't do any good, because a "pull" type fan is more efficient than a "push" setup, and you'll only be putting more electrical load on the motor, while simply blowing air on top of the radiator. Fan cfm doesn't build in a compound fashion with more fans. You need to get the air through the radiator fins for it to do any good.

That's why I want to put the FAL fan inbetween my front mount intercooler and my vertically mounted radiator.

"Same difference"...

You're using the stock rad fan setup behind your vertically-mounted radiator, correct? Since you've got a FMIC, you don't need a fan for it, and all the FAL fan will do is circulate air around in front of the radiator. You can't "add up" fan cfm unless the fans are tied directly to one another.
