Aftermarket CD player

I have seen a few threads about what folks have put in, but am curious if there are more of you that have installed aftermarket CD players and which brand. Also, did you only replace the head unit or did you do other upgrades or additions?

Eventhough i do not have a Rx-7 right now, i have worked at a stereo install shop. I would highly recommend Eclipse head units or Clarion. Although i may be bias against them because i have an Eclipse in my car and those are the two main brands the shop i worked at sold. But they are a very nice unit. Also if your not into looks nakamichi sells very nice head units, probally one of the best around. Personally i would upgrade the speakers to component speakers if at all possible, they will give you the best sound, but you may need an ampifier to really get the best out of them. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the feedback. Not sure what you mean by component speakers? What amp would you recommend? It would need to be slim, as it would probably fit under one of the seats.

I'm with scrub all the way. eclipse has some really cool technology to get a really good sound. That said, they ALL have a cheesy blue backlight that doesn't match the FD interior whatsoever (which is why I don't have one in my car).

Nakamichi makes a couple REALLY good head unit, but be ready to pay out the noce for them - they are super expensive, but offer some really good features (they also match the interior lighting better. hehe).

I guess the headunit you use depends on what you want out of it and how much you're willing to spend...

Well if you have an FD try the Alpine CDA-7894 it plays MP3's has a subwoofer output, ect, ect.. basically for $350- 400 bucks you get what you pay for. Sounds great in IMO.

The best part about it is that it has as AMBER function that closely enough matches the interior of the FD and it dosen't have those anoying displays that most headunits seem to have today.

Are you all running these aftermarket units with or without the Bose acoustic wave, stock or other speaker system? Thanks for the input.

That sounds like a great addition. I love those amber lights. Tom

I sell car stereo at Circuit city. Right now i've got an alpine cva-1003 video screen. 6 disc mp3 changer. xm satellite radio. an infinity bass link. and a ps2 in there. If there is anyone out there that wants to buy it pm me. The stuffe is all less then 4 months old and all has at least 3 year warrenty from circuit city. I had all this **** in my del sol and i'd rather just go back to regular radio. BTW the 1003 is motorized in dash.

Running aftermarket head units without the BOSE system is much easier than with. But it is not impossible.

Do a search on the BOSE subwoofer and stereo system and you will find many threads telling you about how to replace the entire system, or get aftermarket HU's to work with the BOSE system.

I am running the Alpine like I said, for the fronts I have polk component speakers, for the rear I have some kenwoods 5x7's 3-way speakers. For my base I have the Bose acoustic wave. Most people hate the Bose acoustic Wave, I like it so I got it installed. I don't like the sound of a base tube IMO it's too ghetto.

Do a search under my name, I have explained how I did it. Most installers will tell you that it can't be done but they are just ignorant.

Is that Alpine one that will only extend the antenna if you are using the tuner?

yes it only extends the antenna when you are using the tuner. When playing CD's (or is off) the antenna is not extended.

I shopped for a long time before I found this alpine deck. I was looking for something that sounded good, matched my interior dash lighting without the annoying display.

Crutchfields lists it (for 399) but it won't come up as one that will fit in an FD (as a stock replacement, I guess).
