After Market Engine Computer Reset when power lost?

For those of you who run a aftermarket engine computer...

Since the computer needs to be tuned for your car, what happens when it loses power for an extended period?

Does that mean that it will need to be re-programmed again?

How do you store your settings?

Some memory systems will only work as long as a capacitor or internal battery is live.

Do these computers have flash type storage?

My car has been sitting in my garage for 8 months with a blown motor and I decided to start it up drive it around the block and check the computer. The battery had been out of the car for five months so I put it back in for a check to see if the map was gone, then I removed it for three more months. The maps were fine. I have a power FC.
BTW: The motor is apart and I am waiting for parts, I got tired of the car just sitting around.

The PFC uses a battery like almost any computer type device. It would be pretty useless if you lost your map when the battery was disconnected. Typically, the batteries installed in motherboards last for years.

There's RAM and there's ROM/Flash memory. The latter doesnt loose data without electricity.

i'd be really surprised if the PFC or any ECU uses batteries.
