How long after replacement of these things can one expect to get before they need replacement again? Has mazda made an update to the part to make them last longer since 93 when the FD came out?

I think it's just going to be a function of how many miles you put on you car and how/where you drive it. In the case of the pillowball bushings, I don't beleive there were any re-designs by MAZDA.
Maybe once a year or so I'll check the dust covers over them and re-pack them with grease if needed, just to keep the moisture out.
