Advice on OMP/MOP replacement?
My car threw a CEL this week, #27 (metering oil pump) and went into limp mode. I've got a replacement on the way from Fritz. The FSM doesn't offer a list of what has to be removed, and a search here kicked up precious little too. Since the only time I've seen one is on engines I've helped pull for friends, I don't remember how the wiring is routed or exactly what needs to come off to change it in the car. Any tips, pointers or info on this appreciated.
I've never actually changed the MOP while the engine was installed in the car.

Has anyone ever changed the OMP with the engine in the car? The more I look at this, the more discouraged I get. If possible, I'd like some reassurance that it can be done.....even if it is a major PITA.
god DAMN mazda...i know this will happen to me next week now...I can't believe an OMP has gone bad. Thats probably one of the must crucial parts of the motor..at least its telling you. Good luck id like to see some info on how to do this because someone else is bound to have this problem soon too.
There are very few things on this car which can't be done with the engine in the car. This is not one of them.
I don't see why you wouldn't have access to it with removing the air intake, possibly the primary intake elbow and actuators.

the OMP is towards the front of the engine. just remove the intake tubing and such.
With the hoop propped and looking straight into the engie bay from the front:
The OMP is located at teh bottom left hand side towards the front of the engine. You will see two pinkish clear lines (could be filled with black oil too) running to it.
This should not require engine removal.

Thanks for the responses guys. I do know where the OMP is. Part of my concern was it's location, and whether I'd have to remove the turbos to access it. The other concern is the routing of the wiring from the base of the front engine hook. It just disappears beneath the PS pump and waterpump housing. I'll be doing the continuity and voltage tests set out in the FSM, but visually I'm seeing nothing unusual so it's likely the OMP itself.
Assuming the worse, I guess the only thing to do is dive in when my replacement arrives. I'll try to take pictures and make notes along the way in the event their useful to someone else.

I removed an OMP from a '94, yup, only removed. I had to take all the duct work out, remove the plastic belly pan under the front end, take the actuator off the front turbo and I was able to remove the pump, barely. To be able to hold the replacement and get the bolts in and started would have at least taken another set of hands, but more likely removing the turbos. Without the turbos in there, it probably would have been easier to get the OMP out too. As for the wires, you're right, they dissapear up under the water pump and alternator, and the plug is on the drivers side of the motor near the power steering pump. There is what looks like a vacuum resevior over there that needs to be removed to get the OMP plug past, with that out and some other accessories off the front of the engine, getting the wires out isn't too bad.
