Advice on Hatch lift

I have a 1994 touring and when opening the hatch it pops and as I lift it seems very stable. I can stop it almost at any point in lift and it neither drops nor lifts. This seems like a good sign to me but this is my first RX7. A friend mentioned to me that the lift struts maybe on their way out as he is accustomed to hatches almost self lifting if the struts are good.

I see lots of posts about replacing shock but not what to expect from "good" hatch struts. What should I expect out of good hatch struts on an FD? Thanks.

There are higher power struts that will "auto lift" the hatch but they're typically for people that have heavy wings. If yours doesn't fall on it's own and will hold whatever position, then they're fine. The real test is doing that on a cold day. If you get the same results then they have plenty of life left.

Thanks cr-rex. Like so many things with the rx7, I am not sure what to expect.
It does not really get cold in San Diego, so they should be fine for a while.

Mine also holds almost any position, low enough and it'll fall closed. Stock touring with VIS 99spec wing replica in CF.

JP3 sells upgraded struts that will auto lift even with a wing.
