Adjustment screw in my oil drain pan

I'm in the middle of buttoning up some oil leaks on the oil pan and the filter pedestal and found this in my drain pan. Pan was cleaned, I drained the oil into it. Removed the oil pan and set it upside down on the drain pan. I did not notice this in the pan before but who knows. I then removed the oil filter pedestal to replace the orings and used the drain pan to catch extra oil. Caught a crush washer as well (I knew that had fallen). I do not recognize it. Does anyone know where it might have come from? Could have been sitting on top of the engine and fallen for all I know.

Thanks

Greg

Also, I removed my elbow from the throttle body to get access to the pedestal, so maybe something from in there?

It's either the set screw from your oil pump body or stationary gear bearings.....neither are good news for you unfortunately!

Yep, that's from deep inside the engine. Was the engine recently rebuilt?

Unfortunately you're probably going to have to tear down the engine. Short term it will probably run just fine, but long term you could spin a bearing which tears up EVERYTHING in the engine.

It's an original engine (pulled from a yard in 2001) as far as I know. I may put a hold on it as I have a second car to work on and a planned rebuild for this engine. Not worth the risk I don't think.

That is the set screw from the oil pump. The pump is supposed to be dimpled to keep the screw from backing out but I lock tite them in addition to that. Stop driving the car immediately. Without it the pump won't be able to build proper oil pressure and you will trash the motor in no time. Unfortunately the only correct way to fix this is to pull the motor and stand it with the front pointing up as the front cover will have to be removed in order to get to the oil pump. Doing it in the car is a gamble as the thrust bearings can fall and get pinched.
