Question Adding Light to Disney Fan Mod?

Ok guys, I need your expert electricity help with this one...I did the Dave Disney fan mod and it works freaking great...BUT since then I have left the switch on killed my battery twice...

What I want to do is add a red light somewhere that comes one when I turn the switch the fans on and goes off when I turn the fans off...

I was trying to find a source that is on all the time and run the light to that and then splice either the positive or negative light wire to one of the terminals on the switch...However I wasn't successful in finding this always on power source...the flashlight only comes on when you turn the lights on so that didn't help much..

Are there any of you who did this or have a clue how I could go about doing it?

Thanks,
David

What about splicing into the actual cigarette lighter? I tried using that when hooking up my boost gauge, but I had to switch the wires over to the ashtray, cause I realized the lighter power was on all the time.

That seems like a pretty good idea, and should work well. Where are you planning on putting the light?

why not put an LED right above the switch which goes on when you click the switch up and closes when you click the switch down?

Why not just get a lighted switch? You can get them at Radio Shack. I have one, works well...

I was just about to suggest this. Definitely go out to Radioshack and invest in one of the self-illuminating switches.

the lighter is on whenever the key is in the "on" position. Now that I think about it, this probably wouldn't work for your situation, because you probably want the light to be on even if the key is removed. Oh well, I thought it was a good idea at the time.

HEy Guys,
thanks for the replies...I did try a lighted switch but for some reason (can't remember exactly) the way it was hooked it never worked and I tried it every other way...I think it came on when the fan was off but when I switched the contacts the light never came on...

right now I mounted a toggle swithc right by the crotch AC vent...it's pretty much hidden and out of the way...I was planning on puttingthe light in one of the blank switched like the defroster is in.

I have a 94 too so I guess the cig lighter is not going to be on all the time either. Damn

I did the Disney fan mod and low/med fan speeds weren't cutting it for me with a FMIC (in my testing, the diff in speed from low to med was almost imperceptible). I played around a little bit, and on my car, I was able to find a single wire that, when grounded, caused the fans to come on high (the speed that only comes on with the A/C). An added benefit is that the fans go OFF when the ignition is off. I also had killed my battery several times with the Disney setup. I'll have to look when I get home tonight to see what relay/wire I'm grounding.

Note: I haven't thoroughly tested this, so I don't even really know what will happen if the switch is on and I click on the A/C.

FWIW, I have a 94 with the fan recall.

I must have the loudest fans in the world. I can hear them walking away from the car next to a freeway.

Plus I SOOOOOO **** about the things, I pretty much always know when the fans are on. Need to get my head checked!!!

Here is the way to connect a LED light to work at the same time when the fans are in on positon and to turn off when fan is off.

Run a single wire to the same relay you did run the wire to ground the relay to switch (ground) the fans on.

On of the thick wires on that same realy is the wire that gives power to fans to turn on, (easy to find out which one with 12 volt tester when you turn the fans on manually with switch, the tester light will turn on and of with fans at the same time) that is where you connect that single wire to the LED light and to ground. Put the LED light on you favorite place in your dash or center console and enjoy your fan light ... real simple.

Just to add some information you could allways splice into the turbo timer to shut the fans off when it shuts off. it should be to hard to do it that way. Im considering doing it my self maybe O well just a thought. If you do that It will prevent you from killing your batery.

that's exactly what i was goin to say... buy a used turbo timer from ebay... no frills... whatever and just hide it somewhere.. or be slick and make a panel w/ the timer that says "FANS"....

Also, some alarms have a turbo timer function, you can tap into that...

Why is it people are going through the trouble of hooking up the fan mod this way to get 2 speeds (or whatever) instead of just hooking them up with the wire behind the ECU? When hooked up with the wire behind the ECU the fans will turn off in 10 minutes, plus, if after 10 seconds from when the ignition is turned off and the switch is thrown, the fans will run on medium instead of high. Is there some kind of benefit to this type of hookup?
