Adding backseats to FD?

Is there a kit anyone knows about to convert that useless shelf in the back of the FD to 2 useless seats? I have a 4 and 5 year old and would love to take them to school together... can't be too difficult but just was looking for a quick kit.

Thanks in advance-

The JdM cars have rear seats, check the for sale section, or one of the importers on the forum.

Don't do it. Think about what would happen if you get into an accident:

Insurance guy: "No problem sir, just fill out these papers and we'll have you taken care ....wait a minute...did you say you're kids were in the BACK seat of a TWO SEATER car?"

SCinfidel: "Yeah, i put these sweet japanese seats in just like the did in the factory"

Insurance guy: "Sorry, this car was saftey tested to DOT standards as a two seater, claim denied"

SCinfidel: "But...but they're sold like this overseas as a factory option, it's the same parts!"

Insurane guy: "I HAVE SPOKEN!"

If you were closer I would offer up a Trade, as I have rear seats and find them completely useless... but shipping would be a killer

just leave it.... not worth loosing the storage bins over "convenience" of taking your two kids to school.

either have them both sit in the passenger seat, or dont take the FD at all and take the daily.

the rear seats in Japan were added to lower insurance purposes, from what i've heard.

i dont see how even kindergarten or first graders would find the rear seats comfortable.
My dads GSL-SE had rear seats and i never found them "adequate" when i was that age

If you are serious I would be interested in looking at a price?? I do a ton of shipping in my biz and get great Fedex rates. seriously gimme a price.

The rest of you guys I totally understand the 'don't do it' advice but a car without backseats is going to make life miserable with the wifey...

Then you bought the wrong car. Please don't put your kids on the back seats of an FD. Be a more responsible parent and put your kids in the adequate car. Cool factor over the safety of your kids is not cool at all.

New to the board and new to the RX7, so I do have questions but one thing I won't swing is some joker calling me a bad parent.. where do you get off?

I have seen a couple FD's with backseats and know that Japanese spec vehicles had backseats so how is this a dangerous proposition?

Again, commenting on my parenting is pretty broke dude, you should read the crap you post before you send it out.

Yeah, wife drives a Rover and my daily is Dodge 2500 Cummins... Really not a big deal but saw a few photos and thought it might be nice to be able to throw them in the backseat for the occasional trip with the kids. I hear that could make me the Hannibal Lecter of parents but so be it

You're looking at about $500-$700 all in for back seats. You can probably recoup $300-$400 for your bins, center divider and 1/4 Panels.

When you get them you will ABSOLUTELY need the following:

- Lower Back Seat (replaces bins)
- Upper Back Seat (replaces divider)
- Rear 1/4 Panels w/ Seat Belt Holes
- Rear Seat Belts AND Recipients (buckles)

Optional, for a 'complete' conversion, you will need:

- JDM Center console (it's shorter)
- Possibly JDM (or additional) carpet. Don't quote me on that as I can't recall whats under the longer USDM center console. In either case, this is only considered if you do the shorter JDM center console.
- Trunks plastics that surround the shock towers (they have a mount for the upper seat)

I'm not gonna tell you what to do with your kids, but IMO this open up the back area considerably and again, IMO looks a bit better. I rarely have anything in my bins, and the tools and ProTek that I do carry fit nicely in a hot/cold lunch carrier.

Make sure to talk with your insurance company first or find a company that will allow an exception. You honestly should have no problem being able to use the seats.
Only problem is they take away from your storage space. . .

I do think the seats are very comfortable for kids. I put a 7 year old in the back of mine and he fell asleep after 10minutes. He loved it because he fit right into the snug seat. A booster or child seat will not fit at all that's for sure.
Please remember that with 4 passengers you might exceed the weight capacity on the car and your handling will be terrible.

Yup, had a girl sit back there one time when i first had it installed.

She was like 5'3. Cutest thing i ever seen lol.

Its not for seating per say, its mainly for cosmetics.

But yes it would fit your children and they are for sale sometimes. I thought about selling mine because i want to put a rollbar. But i think i can make it fit even with the seats.

I found this thread while searching but the guy supplying these are in England

I believe that all the FD's have a 'max occupancy' weight of 350lbs. I weigh 180 and each of my girls are 40-45... wifey tips the scales 115(or so she says) so officially all four of us would exceed but just me and girls should be fine.

I am just stoked to get one, I put my money down last week and pick it up next week(after Thanksgiving).

I did read what I wrote, a few times. It just what you are trying to do doesn't seem logical. I will never put my kids in that situation. ****, My daughter is 12 and the same height as my wife and she doesn't even ride in the car. You could be the best drive in the world, it takes one idiot on the road to change your whole life or your kids.

I have been in this forum for a while and I have read horror posts where drivers get ejected out of their cars through the back window, even with seat belts on. Now, when I think of kids seating on a back seat for this car, to me seems that they are more prone to this kind of fatality. Sorry to come to you hard but it just how I feel when it come to the safety of any child.

Do you let your kids ride on a school bus? Those POS buses don't have seatbelts and I remember getting thrown off the seat into the air plenty of times during trips on the highway. Everyone wanted the seats right on top of the wheel
So let us look at buses. Now this is from when I used the bus YEARS ago but I doubt anything has changed.
Airbag. . . Nope
seatbelts. . . nope
Seats in general. . .some kids can't even touch the floor with their feet
Head room . . . I think plenty of kids have experienced their head hitting the roof after a big bump.

It doesn't take much training to become a bus driver either (NO OFFENSE TO THEM).

FD is perfectly fine with children if the rear seats are installed properly. Kids under 12 are probably SAFER in the back seat too especially on airbag equipped FDs.

Look in the parts wanted section if your interior is black. Marcel burkett wants to trade his seats for bins.

Kids don't ride school bus either, but school buses here do have seat belts.
