I just recived a quote from a local shop to upgrade my factory cooler to duel coolers....
Labor was about 30 hours and kit was $1500......does that sound about right for this type of project? new to upgrades.

 

Why would it take 30 hours? No reason for that.

 

I haven't done the work to upgrade the coolers before, so take my comment with a grain of salt. 30 hours seems way over the ballpark. Someone could pull the engine, rebuild it, put it back in less than 30 hours, which would be a much more difficult job than upgrading the oil coolers. I would ask for a detailed quote to separate costs for parts & labor if they haven't done so.

 

10 hours, tops, and that's a BIG stretch. What dual oil cooler kit did you look at? The SBG kit is way less than 1500 and has 2 high quality coolers and all the lines and fittings you need.

 

That is why I am coming to you folks, I am not exactly sure why that quoted me 30 hours, bumper if off car as we are upgrading it, lines are also off factory cooler, so why 30 hours, is a great question. As far as $1500 for the duel cooler, they did say what brand, just cooler would run 1500, and labor 30 hours.

Maybe they plan to duct the hell out of it, I am not sure. I did inquire, and I will let you know what they say....I hope I am not being taking for a ride! so stay tuned .....

Sounds like they are trying to rip you off, or are trying to compensate for learning curve since they may not do much work on RX7's. Either way, that quote is ridiculous.

 

Yup. Took me the better part of a day (about 8 hrs IIRC), couple hours here and there, and that's from having the car fully put together on the ground back to fully put together on the ground. Assuming you have all the parts ready to go (which is the truly hard part.. figuring out exactly what you need and where to get it). I'm no pro, and I take my time when working on my car just to be extra careful... do it right do it once The price on the kit sounds outta control... what are your goals for the car, you may not need huge oil coolers/expensive bits/hardware, etc.

 

no joke, find a local guy with some experience and exchange help for beer and grilled food/pizza.

edit: hell you could fly me out there to lend ya hand for less than they want, all I would want is the plane ticket and the food, and possibly a place to crash for a night.

 

or just wait... look for a good used kit on here in the classifieds section...and tackle the job on your own. Just take your time... you'll reap the benefits in the future.. and you'll learn a hell of a lot about your car. If you want to save money and learn about your car... do it your self. but Mike is right.. Do it once.. Do it right.

 

This is why my quote is so high -

they don't like doing kits, says they have had bad luck in the past, suppliers cut corners and material is cheap. (ok) ...this is what they do -

"I spec everything from the coolers themselves, hose, fittings, we make the brackets and route the lines for the setup of the vehicle. When we do a cooler setup on a car that has our intercooler and radiator setup, we integrate the oil cooler hosing. Since we are making all the lines, we can control the exact lengths rather than trying to figure out ways to run hoses that were made for the factory provisions in these pre-made kits. In addition we also run some of the lines into the frame rails of the chassis, this is to protect the lines in the event of an accident. This also gives a much cleaner look as well and provides better access to components when working on the car because the lines are tucked out of the way."

So sounds like they actually fabricate their own kit(?)...... Great, but out of my budget, have any of you had bad luck with your kits? Have your hoses failed?
