Aaaaccckkk! Surprising discovery....

I took off my airbox to contemplate doing the airbox mod per the Robinette site, and to my dismay, one of my cooling fans (the passenger side one) is missing!

Hmmmm, well, the attachment is not working right now....seems to try and default to a gif each time.....but anyway, where does one find a fan, and does anyone know how much, by chance?

It is interesting to note that the car was examined by a Mazda dealer and passed with flying colors.....

fans

The whole thing is gone.....just a big empty hole in the frame that normally holds it, with a forlorn electrical plug dangling.....
Why oh why would someone NOT replace the damned thing?

Oh yeah, there was a couple of petrified creatures wedged down around the front crossmember area.....I THINK one of them was a bird.....

Here's the price a dealer quoted me:

fan blade: $38
fan motor: $206.70 (eek!)

But I got the whole assembly (shroud and fans/motors x 2) from someone for $150 out of a junker. I might be able to help you out cause I know someone parting out an FD. And I've got some spare parts too.

Be prepared for a bit of work fixing it. I couldn't figure out any way to get the fan assembly out except through the bottom (my engine bay is far from stock, so that might be obvious). So you're in for a radiator flush & fill Maybe some guys on here have some tips.

It looks like it will be no big deal to replace the missing fan, as it is top mounted in the frame (I think). The problem with getting a salvage one is that there simply are no wrecked FDs in ANY salvage yard withing a 100 mile radius.....

I would certainly consider a good used unit from anyone.

I hate to purchase from the dealer, their markup is incredible sometimes.....like the $60 impeller for a water pump on my boat that I found in a marine catalog later for $12....that sort of **** drives me crazy!

Surely if one could just get the model # of the fan, there is SOMEWHERE that sells them.....I mean, Mazda doesn't make these, I doubt....

Bajaman,

I have an extra fan motor, passenger fan, and the plastic mounting frame. The driver's side fan motor and and fan are missing so all you would have to do is bolt in your driver side fan and blades and go!

E-mail at lo_hun@yahoo.com and we can work out the details if you are interested.

I know how you feel. When I had my intercooler out, I found a bolt (the one for the intercooler piping) stuck in the L fan. I called Pettit and they hooked my up with a used motor. Everything is working ok now. Also, there are at least 3 Mazda junk yards to check - MazMart(GA), MazdaRecycling(CA), and KD Rodgers(PA).

Here is a pic I took a while back. You need to get the fan under the housing, which requires removing it from the radiator (three bolts at the top). The motor is top mount, but the bolts holding it onto the housing aren't. I see no reason why you couldn't change that though. If, when you remove the housing from the radiator, you have enough room to slide the fan under it, you should be good to go.

I wanted to take the whole housing out to refurbish it, but the air conditioner dryer and upper radiator hose prevented me from taking it out through the top. So that's why I assumed it had to come out though the bottom.

Good luck.

I took out the whole fan assembly from the top. Once you get the airbox, intercooler, battery out of the way, I removed the upper radiator hose. I unbolted the air cond dryer and had to bend the lines a little. Came out easy and replacing the fans was a snap. I feel better now that I know both fans work. It's got to help in the summer.

You need to check that both fans work. I know many FD's which have had 1 burnt out. If you only have 1, what happens when this one goes? Can you say new motor...

Damn......I see what you mean about the mount.....

But it looks like SOMEONE took the old one out without removing the whole assembly, as the bolts and other fasteners associated with the I/C and radiator and all that seem to be virgin, meaning they haven't had a wrench on them......

O'Reilly's Auto Parts says they can hook me up with a fan, all they need is the basic dimensions and specifications.....but that is the trouble, I can't tell them without taking the OTHER fan out, which looks like a PITA.....

How much coolant do you lose when you remove the upper radiator hose? I started to wiggle it around a bit and saw some dribble out. I wasn't prepared that day to top it off, so I aborted the whole process.

Dude, I've got RX-7 fans sitting on the floor of my living room. If you want measurements, I can hook you up! If you don't want to go that route (I wouldn't) me and Rated R1 have both offered to sell you stock replacements. We are here to serve you!

Plus, the fans in the stock FD are not the same. One has five blades, the other four.

The fan blades are not the same, but the motors are. They have different # of blades so they don't go off in a harmonic vibration.

I would use the RX7 motors. I wouldn't want to tax the relay circuit with incorrect voltage\amperage.

You don't lose too much coolant. Just have all the bolts undone first. Pull the hose straight up higher than the motor. Very little will come out. Then put the hose back on after pulling out the fan assembly.

fans...

Skotx, Rated R1 -

Yeah, I want the original Mazda unit, so let me hook up with you guys. I am in and out of my office here at work quite a bit, so my response may be spotty......

My home e-mail is wolfie@oldwiz.net

Just in case we can't get hooked up during the day......

Thanks a bunch, guys.
