Jspecs are typically in the mid 3s. I have seen them sold for as low as 2800. In my mind, big advantage here is getting brand spankin new turbos. I dont think the power increase is as much as people think.

Re: BNRs. I have a set of the old style 3s, and the diff between them and the stockers is night and day. Bigtime power.

Spoke to Brian at length yesterday, and he has a new set of stage 3s he's testing out. No more dynamic seals so no more oil smoke problems, and many more new components, to include 25% thicker shafts. Hehe

thats what i was thinking... bnr power increase would be much more, especially w/ a stage 2 or 3.
bnr stage 2 and 3 are no longer on rx7store.net... where'd they go?

That, and the low end primary boost spool up at 2200 to 2500 rpm The J-specs won't make big power. AFIK, Tim Benton made 360 rwhp (DynoJet dyno)...don't recall the boost pressure...1.05 kg/cm^2 (15 psi)? There are US spec twins making about that.

I made 363 rwhp and 320 ft/lbs at 14.22 or 1.0 on the PFC at a safe A/F ratio so I'm not close to the edge of reliability.

I bought them because I got a great deal and also the piece of mind that I shouldn't have any problems...ie smoking, rebuild quaility not being up to par, etc. I'm pleased with the quick spool up even though I gave up some HP not going with an upgraded set. Another warning, DO NOT BUY any type of SR Motorsports upgraded twin set...its a rip off and you're not getting anything for the 2300 you just spent other than a non functional turbo that nothing was done to it other than clipping the wheels. Ray's an *** and took me for a ride a set.

edge of blowing up, not the edge of reliability

Some people have stated this is not true, but I do remember reading about it somewhere and it was not just a forum opinion. ...
When I had my 99+ RZ turbos installed PFS told me that I needed the Efini Y pipe with these new turbos. Since I wanted the new Y pipe anyway for all the reasons mentioned above, I never questioned it. Perhaps it is possible to ghetto rig the old Y pipe to the new turbos, but if you are in there already you may as well get the updated pipe.

And I 2nd everything Manny said about the turbos. I've been very happy with them on my mildly modified FD.

you don't need the efini y pipe, stocker works fine with the 99 turbos. It's just the efini flows better.

It seems we've gained a few new FD3S Rx7 owners; I want to help start them off right

Yeah, I have an Efini Y-pipe with my J-spec twins. It's an outstanding reliability mod, but I've never been able to verify the 10-hp claim

That's good power for only 14.22 psi, Tim! Are your mods listed?

Ironically I bought my J-spec twins from SR Motorsports. Got a wicked deal on them last Nov--$2600. I got them at Ray's "Garage Sale" price. The J-spec twins were as advertised...brand new. I recently had them removed and inspected, and Zavier @ Rx7 Store said they were in outstanding shape (with already 12,000 miles on them!).

Manny,

As far as mods, here goes:
M2 intake, efini y pipe, M2 Med IC, 99 spec turbos, ceramic coated DP, resonated MP, PFS catback, hks twin ignition, 9's all around, 11.5lb flywheel, CF driveshaft, full set of pullies, does a mazdaspeed sticker count?

That's all I can think of that might add HP or free it up.

A Mazdaspeed windshield decal adds ~ 3 hp

Great info everyone...

Just saying thanks since I started the post.

Why I asked:

A while back my mechanic thought my turbos might be leaking just a bit; but because there was so much oil on the engine he couldn't really tell. The problem was a cracked lateral bolt.

The car started a new/old? leak a few months ago; and I assumed it may be the trubos. My mechanic told me my turbos look good (no oil).

The current leak:

If it sits, the oil accumulates somewhere and does a little burning, otherwise the leak is too small to detect and doesn't blow on anything 'hot.'
