99 Spec Turbos... The whole story.

I have searched (+1 for me)
and searched (+1 again)

Who here has installed 99 spec AKA efini turbochargers on their stock turbo car? I bought turbos that i thought were stock, but appear to be 99 spec. The exhaust manifold is different. So are the intake bolt positions.

Someone please contribute non-speculative responses to the differences i have witnessed.

People "have read" that the are bolt on. If they are, please help me id what turbos i have.

Thanks!
Rob

The manifold is NOT different with the 99 spec twins. Bet you a nickel you got Cosmo 13B twins, which are smaller than FD turbos.

The real 99 twins are total bolt-on - everything external is the same, it's just the inside that's different.

You didnt get these off of ebay did you?

There was a guy selling cosmo twins and billing them as 99 spec twins. I sent him a message telling him as much, he told me he'd take the listing down.

The best thing for you do at this point is to post up pics of the turbos from all angles.

Yep...the 99 spec have "abraidable seals" that you can see. They are like a black plastic ring around the turbine blades.

Those definitely aren't FD turbos on the left. I would also guess cosmo twins, since the pics are dark on my screen.

There is a reporting feature that I use when I see an eBay auction like that. It won't make the seller change anything, but at least eBay knows that something was wrong. I imagine that when a buyer contests an auction, if the auction was reported then it supports their side.

Sorry to bump this up. But since someone seems to be misrepresenting turbos on Ebay. I found my old pics of my 99 spec turbos before they got installed.

so how do you like running the newer turbos? sorry to dig up this old thread, but i know that a lot of the issues witih older FD's stemmed from the twin turbo setup. did switching over to the 99 spec turbos resolve any of the issues?

Most of the issues related to any kind of stock twins come from the stock solenoid and vacuum hose control system and the incredible heat retained the stock manifolds.

The 99 specs will lower intake temps, all other variables held equal. But an intercooler upgrade almost always gets intake temps where they need to be. The 99 specs are good for slightly faster spool and a little more capability at higher boost levels. But they're still well below the performance and reliability of a single.

All i no is i would like to find two sets of 20B twins and take the bigger turbo off one and install it on the other so they would both be the bigger ones.

If you didn't know the 20B twins have two different size turbos, think it is like a HT-10 and HT-16

The primary is smaller but the secondary is bigger.

So if I have a set of turbos how can I tell (by looking at them) if they are 99 spec twins?

Also, the serial number on the back - N3G1 is the '99+ 280bhp twins.

correct me if i'm wrong but the bump in HP doesn't have to do with the 99 spec twins.

I believe the horsepower difference was a combination of things: new y pipe, higher boost, slight change in turbos, etc....

power = boost + exhaust (bigger dia. dp + better cb) + y-pipe. Turbos aid spool up - but, according to some sources, create *less* power in the low range.

if people keep insisting on calling them efini turbos, they'll get efini (91-97 pre-upgrade) turbos.
