95 engine rebuild cost $3200?

Hey guys,
I'm having J&R in Long Island do my rebuild. they are charging me $2016 for parts and labor + $1250 for engine/seal kit?
What's included in the engine seal kit and why does it cost so much?
Does that sound reasonable?

a little bit of a markup but it sounds about right. the seal kit comes with all the necessary seals and gaskets and apex seals, the apex seals alone are ~$300+ depending on if they are replacing the side seals as well then add in about another $200 to the price of the kit.

if you had the engine out and priced around you could get a better deal on the labor though.

Here's a typical rebuild kit:

J+R did my motor about a year or 2 ago. Around the same price and it's still running strong.

thanks for the feedback guys...
That price is for the rebuild and installation. Imma get a streetport and a 13.5 lb flywheel installed as well for an additional price.

You also might want to look into a clutch (recommend ACT HD-00, street/strip) Urethane motor mounts, stainless steel oil metering lines, oil pan reinforcement brace, and all new coolant and fuel lines. This would also be a good time to have your injectors either upgraded or cleaned and flow tested.

That sounds like a good price to me. I believe that I just payed $3500 for my rebuild engine from gotham racing.

J&R did my motor 2 years ago as well. I've been very happy with their work overall. Cost was $3500 with labor to remove, rebuild and install. You might want to go for the upgraded silicon seals over the stock rubber Mazda seals.

While its apart, do the Fuel Pulsation Dampener and do the clutch fork as well as what Goodfellas recommended. You'll have to do those things eventually anyway, but won't have to get banged on labor if you do it while the motor is out. I respectfully disagree on the oil pan reinforcement unless you're making big power. The motor they rebuilt for me has no leaks out of the oil pan.
