My buddy has a Porsche 944 Turbo.. I've seen him go through ups and downs. I know that the 944 has it's own reputation. Which made me think of this...

The question is, how does the 944 compare to the FD in terms of reliability and general running costs? Obviously this is assuming both vehicles are in good condition.

 

The 944 T should put out about 250 hp (stock). It accelerates about the same as the 944 S2, which is about 0-60 mph in 6.2 sec (sometimes in the high 5 sec range). 1/4 mile comes in about 14.4 sec. These are all stock times. If the car has been modified expect better times. The TT RX7 was capable of 0-60 times of around 4.9-5.4 sec right out of the factory. 1/4 times were atainable in the mid-high 13 sec ranges. Simple exhaust mods increase RX7 performance and reliablility. But on the other hand, a Porsche is a Porsche. It is built better than any Mazda. Repairs will still be somewhat expensive on both cars, parts are cheaper on the rx7.
Remeber the Porshe 944t was a sports car. The rx7 is a race car in civilian clothing. On the track the RX7 will always win.

 

Yes, i know thst both cars seem to be expensive to maintain. Anything has to be cheaper than a Porsche from what i have seen. But what about how frequent the "problems" occur?

 

I used to have a 944 turbo. Now I have a '93 RX7. I bought the RX7 used a year ago and have had zero problems so far. Of course you hear lots of horror stories about the RX7. Maybe I have been lucky.

The 944 turbo was a good car. The RX7 is faster and handles better. The 944 was reliable if you took good care of it which wasn't cheap. I have to admit I worried less about my 944 blowing up than I do about the RX7. But once again my RX7 has been great and maybe I'm just scared by the horror stories.

I've found that you just need to get to know the RX7 well. Most of the problems with the 3rd stem from unknowledgable mechanics or owners.

My uncle had a 944turbo it was the first turbo car I ever drove. I was a little shakey on manual then too but once I got on the highway I punched it and got that rush of a turbo where you really don't get thrown back but then you look down and you are going over 120 just like that.

2 months later I bought my fd

My uncle sold it because he was always having to repair it. The 944 looks like an 80s car the fd looks like a 2010 model. I'm not sure which can be made faster or will handle better but I'm guessing it's the fd that wins there too and I know a fd can be very reliable even with the bolt ons if you know what you're doing.
