Need help with S5 efi swap into 83 gs.

Currently finishing up the rebuild of an S5 NA engine with a mild street port to put into my 83 gs. My buddy had RB templates and helped me put the engine together pretty much stock besides the port work.
So far I see that I will have to use my 12a front cover and do some grinding to the slots on the body mounts to get it to fit into the car physically, have that aspect covered.

Wondering, does gsl se oil pan fit S5, and will I have to scavenge a gsl se pickup, or can I use the one for the 12a?
I will be using my fb trans for now, it works perfect.
Now the real issue I guess would be induction.
A carb setup goes for around 900 for s5, so I am contemplating using the stock s5 wiring harness to run the car, or using that 900 towards a sds or haltech setup.

Im wondering if the stock harness is worth the hassle. Since I will be using 12a cover to mount the engine and s5 has a sensor for the omp (will go for premix, omp's scare me)
Ive heard the efi setup goes into limp mode and wont be good for hp. Also if anyone has a pinout for it with a way to bypass the omp sensor taht would be awesome, or if anyone has experience doing this it would be great as well.

Also wondering about fuel delivery. Is the gsl se fuel tank easy to swap into the carbed bodies? Id rather not do a fuel cell, and use all oem parts for this part of the conversion (fuel cells: they cost too much, the install is almost always a weight gain and neccesitates cutting the chassis, and i dont want to do much work with a sender, most of the time they are only truly needed as part of race regulation and this is a street car), I will be using a volvo/porsche 944t fuel pump inline to supply fuel.

Anyone try a surge tank setup? I may just use a CIS surge tank from the early vws, which usually comes with its own hi output fuel pump. Either that or I will have to make one the old fashioned way out of a aluminum catch can.

Just trying to figure out the formula for a sucessful efi conversion. Im getting a lot of enjoyment out of the 83 as she sits, handles awesome, has posi and disc and a decent suspension, just needs some power! 100hp or less is not cutting it in the 05. Looking for 160hp with an exhaust and header, the 12a runs great and im pulling down 24mpg combined street and fwy, so I will be taking about a year to put all the parts together. The mpg drop from 13b doesnt bother me so much I just moved back to SF and will only be driving 800miles a month tops between two cars. I am more interested in fuel delivery options, as I may just do the t2 conversion once i have this s5 engine buttoned up for a while. Thanx.

Yep, the SE pan is the way to go. Either the 12A or SE pick tube will work. The induction depends on preference. If you have all the engine parts (long block), I would probab;ly go with the stock wiring harness and ECU. You could plug the S5 OMP in but not connect it and premix. This way the VDI and 5/6 ports will work correctly. The carb would be the easiest to install though. The carb may be fine since you don't care much about mileage and it doesn't get that cold where you are. The Haltech and similar are good, but you would need to get them tuned.

The SE tank would be a good choice. There is a difference on the sender connection, but that should be easy to deal with. Just need an inline EFI pump. Maybe try to get the GSL-SE hardlines as well as they are larger in diamter than the 12A.

Jayroc on here recently installed a surge tank when he converted his 12A to EFI (running on the megasquirt ECU). Search for his thread, should be easy to find.

Sound like a good plan. Good luck with it. I want to eventually put an S5 intake on my GSL-SE.

Im most definitely going injected, 800 or more for a carb setup is too much for me to handle and still be carbed. Will the s5 omp physically bolt up to the 12a cover? I thought that they would be different? Im thinking i may grow to hate the factory efi setup, ive done a few turbo 240-280z conversions and the weak point has always been factory efi, limiting timing and lacking tunability.

The S5 OMP will not mount on the 12A cover without modification. What you can do is plug in the S5 OMP in (so the ECU doesn't go into limp mode) and premix or adapt a earlier OMP '84-'88 13b (don't think it will work with the 12A front cover, but will work with the GSL-SE front cover). Premix would probably be easiest.

The S5 efi is pretty good (especially compared to the GSL-SE), but is limited as you said. It wouldn't require tuning, so that is an advantage. A Haltech or similar would be nice if you planned to upgrade in the future (TII, larger ports, etc.). It just depends what you want as far as cost, simplicity, and flexability.
