We are test driving a 94 rx7 touring with 80k miles. When it started up, it smoked white smoke then after the engine warmed up, it stopped smoking. What does this mean?

 

The coolant seals are on their way out... Or the twins are "burning" coolant.

You'll need a engine rebuild or new twins...

 

Expect to be spending some money on it soon if you buy the car.

 

did the smoke smell sweet? If it did, then you are looking at coolant seal failure. If not, it could just be condensation in the exhaust

 

In cool weather, steam is normal from the exhaust for a few minutes.

If the steam lasts a long time, the car is hard to start, and it's losing coolant, THEN it MIGHT be a coolant seal.

 

It may be just normal start up. You need to monitor your oil and coolant . If your burning coolant it will look a little yellow -white and the smell it has a very distinct . As for oil thats a no brainer its blue - black and smells like oil ?

I smoke up at start ups but its my tune ..rich as **** and its smells like 115 octane

 

I agree with this. Condensation builds up in the exhaust and the smoke you are seeing is it burning off.

However if the smoke is "thick" and persistent, then you have other problems.

BTW dave, what do you mean "MIGHT" be a coolant seal? Besides the ambient temp and the obvious coolant on ground check, what other factor could this OP's problem be?
