93 R1 Prices/ebay

I've noticed prices are getting soft on all RX-7's. True?

Right now there is one on Ebay, Red R1 that can be had for $10,120.

Thoughts from all on the sliding prices. Is the 7 just showing it's age?

As much as we as an enthusiast community value our cars, the general public does not consider them exotic or semi rare collector cars (as they do for Porsche even though we only got FD's for 3 years)...so yeah that's why the prices are going down. Prices might stay the same or go up if the demand for these cars was high, but for many people including young guys and gals who are looking for a first sports car, many of them would rather purchase a brand new or slightly used 350Z and pay low twenties for the used one, and be able to enjoy it and drive it on a daily basis, something that is difficult to do with the FD in terms of reliability. Sure you can get a clean FD these days for 12-13K with fairly low mileage and great service record, but the amount of maintenence and money it requires to enjoy it is not worth it to many. A lot of people don't even know what the RX-7 is since not many of them are around anymore. Not eveyone is willing to drop that much on a used car, and whether or not you want to admit it, they are 12-13 year old cars.

A few years back I almost bought a silver 94 R2 with 26k on it for $20,000. I was kickin my self for a few years after. Now I'm not sure. Seems like I could get a nice one for $10k and and really nice one for $15.
just my 2 cents. I'm actully probably going to buy one of the Japanese super cars soon.

Hold the phone...I think it may be regional, and seasonal.

I have been watching prices for several years before I bought one. I could have bought several really nice ones in my area for $10,500 back in 2003. The last two I have seen here have been $13,000... It is really hard to tell. I wouldn't sell mine for $10,000 unless I was real hard up and I will drive it until it is a heap if I had to take much less than that... Heck, a junker piston car these days is $3000. A daily driver work car in good shape is no less than $5000, and more like $10000. FD's aren't going down that I can see.

Don't pay too close attention to Ebay... Look at the completed listings. There aren't but a handful that ever sell for low dollar, unless something is really wrong with them, and most of the real good deals are scams. I had three different guys try to scam me in one week on ebay, verified by the ebay police.

Sadly, but what do Supra's have that we don't! Minus reliability, and enormous amounts of "street credit" that they don't completely deserve.

the supra reliability is a huge plus especially with the fact that you can tune your supra to pump out 500hp and it can still be a decent daily driver. Also the supra was available here in the states from 93-98 ... 6 years as opposed to only 3 years for the FD

beg to differ

I just won an auction on ebay on a 93 for $18,100. It only had 19900 original miles. This low of miles is hard to find, so maybe that is the difference between that and paying $13-$15 for one with 40-50K miles. I don't have to worry about apex seals for another 25K miles. I know that I'm not the only one crazy enough to spend that, and in 5 years from now I will resell it for $15 as these FD's are becoming collector cars.

Personally I think that the value of unmodded FD's will go up. They are rare, and a great lightweight sports car. The supra may fast but it's not a sports car by most definitions.
People that collect cars don't want heavily modded cars, which a lot of FD's are. Finding a clean low milage FD with a complete history is getting harder to do which is why I would say "be choosey" and don't **** with it unless you plan on keeping it forever.

Unfortunately it's still 12 years old. Anything rubber could be in tired shape. Many, many parts will still be less than perfect or even require replacement.

IMO, the prices are getting a little wild since the demand is dropping. First, remember that you're reading up on ASKING prices. Except for Ebay, you don't know what the selling price is, if it ever gets sold. Plus many sellers don't know anything about these cars or how to advertise them effectively - so if you find one in an out-of-the-way local classified section you might find a very good price. In my area, it seems prices are pretty high and the supply is relatively scarce.

Second, remember condition, condition, condition. A car can be beaten down a 30k or still be good at 130k. The body and interior condition really matter, and if they've been doing proper maintenance. Many variables not seen in the price.

hopefully one day when im rich i can start buying all these low priced FDs and build a different one for each application, drift, track, drag, top speed, etc. etc. hahaha. I WISH. I notice most FDs i see are stock looking or have very few mods.

When i went to hot import daze in san diego this weekend i noticed there were 5 fds and 1 fc. and out of all of those, 4 were still on stock twins with boltons

Its a good thing the prices are dropping IMO. I see many many FD's on ebay all bid to around 10k or more, and they end around there too, but "reserve not met" These sellers believe their car is worth more than it apparently is because ebay = realistic selling price since its nation wide and saw by anyone looking for an fd.

I think it would be a bad idea to bid full market value price on an ebay listed car unless I could inspect it in person prior to the end of the auction. And I'll step forward to say the vast majority of bidders never get the chance to check the car out well enough to bid full value.

IMO eBay and FDs is a poor match, and the majority of auctions not ending in sales reflects that. It says little about the prices of FDs and a lot about the number of variables which must be assessed in person to determine the car's full value.

I agree, eBay and RX's BAD combo. I still think there is a HUGE amount of people (like myself) who would have a hard time buying ANYTHING at an online aution LET ALONE A CAR!! I look, but notice the prices on eBay are waaay lower than anywhere else I see them ie:autotrader online or local sellers. So you may have a nationwide audience, but it is still a very different market than putting it on your street corner (which I am going to do).

Personally I want to drive and feel the excitment (no pun or marketing intended) before I buy something. Yes you can still buy a lemon, but I feel better about my purchase. Don't get me wrong, I am going to list my car on eBay when I get photo's but I don't expect to sell it that way.

Ia anyone else getting tired of the daily post about the resale of cars? lol I mean we can debate it over and over, but there are SO many variables it's impossible to ever figure out. Bah, I can take a lesson from others and just not read the posts lol ; )

I understand where you are comming from with not wanting to buy a RX-7 off of eBay. My brother purchased his car off of there with no problem. If you have the money to spend you should actually go and see the car, possibly give it a test drive and what not to make sure everything was described properly like we did. When I was looking to buy a FD I looked on eBay first but I ended up buying mine from VFactor on the forums.
