93 automatic, will not power brake is this normal???????

my car is very slow off the line. it will not even turn the tires over with the brake pushed down, the rpms will only build up to 1500 no matter if i push the gas to the floor. when i let go of the brake it seems like it takes forever to get to 3000rpms, but after that it runs strong threw all gears. i know it takes time for the turbos to spool but i just think it should launch better, and i thought any vehicle would power brake? ive not had my car long but im very interested and willing to learn about it. so any automatic owners atleast tell if this is normal.
thanks alot

Not quit normal - with the brakes locked the rpms sould raise to abt 3000 than stall the engine (Torque converter test from the shop manual) the best way to launch is either put trans in L-hold and just roll on the throttle to abt 1500 rpm before releasing the clutch then a quick bump on the shifter to grab second at 7000k (you will hit the buzzer) if I time the shift right it will buzz the rev warning for about 1/4 second then buzzz the tires as it goes into second or rev to 3000k in nutral then yank the lever back to L - you will light up the tires but can also scramble the torque converter the fd dosent power brake well because the rear brakes are too strong

Yeah, that ain't quite normal.....are you using the hold button? I have no trouble with power braking....
But like Max said, you will find a throttle roll-on is pretty damned effective, and yes, you should be able to easily break the tires loose as the boost hits hard, just before the shift to second.....it is a fun fun deal.....kind of a handful at times.....my car always points its nose to the right when I do this....

Power Braking

Yep you have to be in L and have the hold button in. It also helps to pull the anti lock brake relay will allow to you reach higher RPM's without the brakes letting up should you push the wheel. Car should launch pretty well. Still going to be a few tenths slower than a manual.

thanks for the help everyone. yes i know how to use the hold button. and with the brake pressed engine stalls at 1500rpms. i wonder if having 4in catback could be the problem. it might be to big?

If you are running a stock cat a 4" CB is Overkill but should not affect low end torque. - If you want really hard launches get a 4.33 ring & pinion set, to replace the stock 3.90 (compared to the 5spds 4.10) with the auto's really tall OD 4th (taller than 5th on the 5spd) it should still be ok on the Hwy.

Bajaman:
Check your Tire Pressures and / or Alignment (rear toe) it should spin both tires equally and in a straight line (unless you are turning), at least mine always does also could be a DIFF problem like unequal preload on the brgs or something.

maxpesce:

your sig says you have thermotech wrap...........does the stuff come in rolls? how many rolls did you need? where did you get it and when did you put it on the dp? was it applied before or after you installed the dp?
sorry about the number of questions but i'm thinking about installing a dp soon and wondered if it was easier or cheaper than jetcoating...................any info would be appreciated........

1- Yes mine is 2" wide
2- I did not wap the DP myself but it was one piece so must be just from 1 roll (I have since added another repair piece due to an unfortunate curb incident!)
3- MARIAH wraped my DP when they installed it (it is available from SUMMIT Racing and other places) before instalation of the DP is prob much eaiser.
4- I think it is a much better insulator than JetHot or any other thin ceramic coating - I am guessing (from my fryed flesh test) that Thermotec lowers the exterior temp of the DP by 4-500degf however it does not provide the corrosion protection (for a MS DP) that coating does) As for cost I don't know I have never had any thing jet coated and the Thermotec was included in a bunch of other stuff I had done at MARIAH

In Conclusion: I recomend doing both if you can aford it (esp on a MS DP) but if cost is a controlling factor I would COAT a MS DP or WRAP a SS DP.
