9.5 Flywheel? yes/no?

i've heard good and bad speculation about this mod. anyone ever installed a lightened flywheel in their FD? how were the results? i've heard of even "boost creep" type problems associated with the mod. thanks, evan

I have a 9.5... i LOVE it....

I though the drivability would suffer much more than it did... i barely notice it. I've have gone 8.5 or even lighter if i could.

definitely. once you get accustomed to driving it. not great for drags though. harder to launch without bogging.

I love my flywheel. There is no way in hell a flywheel can cause boost creep.

You really notice a difference in 1st and 2nd gear acceleration with a LW flywheel. As stated earlier, it's not for drag racing since you have to gas it a little more to get the car going but it's not that bad. It's been known as the best badg for the buck for acceleration for the $$ - doesn't add actual hp but the car revs faster and the car overall will be quicker - I'm glad I went with one.

it releases hp by drastically lowering rotational inertia.

A flywheel is a great mod. More HP to the rear wheels. You see people talking about (example)400hp with 360rwhp. A lightened flywheel will reduce the hp lost between the engine and the wheels.

Please get one and don't worry about a thing.

The only thing bad about it is you will bog the car some times. I've had it in just about 2 weeks ~ 200 miles. Still bog the car sometimes, but the rpm go up freer, and quicker noticably.

Oh, another bad thing for some people is.....the rev will also come down much faster. I went to about 100 mph and let off the gas. The speed went down a lot faster back down to 80 mph. After that, not too fast. I don't know if anyone would like that or wouldn't.

Anyway, I highly recommend it!

Great thread! I've been debating doing this when I rebuild my engine. Not any more!

FYI,
This is a very good mod if and only IF you do not drag race. If you drag race, this will bring your revs down between shifts too fast and out of boost. Like I said, on the street its great, but not on the track.

thanks for the info ernie
I dont drag race religiously, but i enjoy taking it out to the track often enough and enjoy similar style driving (minus the launching) on the street now and then.
I guess i'll keep away from it. Especially with a single, losing rev's between shifts would be even more of an issue.

i havent had a problem with drag racing. i ran a 13.16 with a 1.98 60ft time.
my mods at the time
peddit intake
main udp
down pipe
greddy pe exhaust
act clutch
9.5 lb flywheel
18x8, 18x9 volk gt-n nitto 555r
b&m shifter

this was on street tires and stock ecu if you are worried about not shifting quickley enough dont get such a light flywheel they offer diffrent weights. also a short shifter helps. i think you are missing out if you dont have a light weight flywheel.

Even if you drag race its a great mod, that what powershifting is for!

I meant for a higher powered RX7. Your almost stock. Actually for your mods, your time is slower than the norm so I'd say the flywheel is hurting you a bit. Im not being rude, just stating from experience. Good luck on your choice. You can always take it out if you don't like it.

If you can afford it, do it. My only complaint is that it wasn't even more dramatic of a change. I would personally disagree with all the "bog" complaints. I've never noticed any problem with this at all. Also, as someone else alluded, if the revs drop too much during upshifts, just keep your foot in the gas a little!

I like it but it makes normal driving a little harder when starting. Shifting is fine but that initial start is a little rough until you get the hang of it.

I think I see what he means by boost creep -- if you are revving more quickly will you not also build boost more quickly creating a possible situation where the wastegate cannot blead off the air fast enough?

Just guessing...

i'm slower than the norm, i was under the impression that a 13.16 is really good for being nearly stock. what is the norm for my mods then?

high 12s would likely be the norm for your mods.

One annoying thing is driving in 1st gear at about 5 - 10 mph (like driving around in a parking lot). Your car will be very hurky-jerky (technical term) and surge a lot. Your passenger will wonder why you can't drive a stick. I bought my car with the lightened flywheel, but I wish I could see how it felt with the stocker.

Does the lightened flywheel also contribute to 1st gear being very short?

The flywheel won't change your gearing. It will let you get thru your gears faster, as the car will accelerate more quickly.

My engine's stock and it still has the hurky-jerky (technical term) tranny and drive shaft tag game going on around that speed in 1st gear. Just the way the FD is. If you're getting really low in the revs, just put a little pressure on the clutch pedal and instead of surging, the clutch will slip when the pulse hits it.
