7 is dead

After all that of trying to figure out the restart problem with my 7, the verdict is finally in...Coolant in combustion chamber.

That probably explains a lot of signs that were happening slowly but surely. The last run that I did with the car it was acting funny the whole time. It was a pretty hard run in the mountains too. I was having some hesitation above 6k rpms, some heavy smoke at hard shifts, etc. I would say I was slowly burning coolant the whole time and it finally gave in.

So anyway, thanks to all for trying to help with the problem. Too bad it was the worst possible case. Any tips or hints from people who recently got new motors or rebuilt ones. Where you got it done, price, etc.

I am still trying to cope with the news so I am still alittle down but eventually will have to decide what I am going to do....

Thanks

Bummer, sounds like you are way beyond block weld help with the heavy smoke.

Jay with RX for your 7 in Tucson is a master at rebuilds. Almost 30 years of experience with rotaries.
He ain't cheap but he does meticulous work.

Buy a MANA rebuild from Malloy, have it shipped to Jay directly, and let him do some street porting and seal upgrades. By far the cheapest way to go.

I was wondering if any one could share there experiences with different engines that they have got....Mazda reman. or taking it somewhere to have it rebuilt....Just wanting to hear your experiences so I can weigh my options....Selling the vehicle is out of the question for me. I enjoyed it too much when it ran. I have a feeling that know matter what i hear it is always going to come back to money but would still like to hear your good and bad experiences with different engines...

Thanks...

Ya i had to get a new reman engine from malloy mazda. I had it sent to dave at kds and he said the engine was a master peice. Not those words but along that line. He said he was really happy with what he got for me. Its only like 2,000 for the engine with a core. Dosent matter whats wrong with it cause i only had one salvagable rotor. Well hope this helps.

I've got a mazda reman and it has been nice. If I could do it over I would definitely look into pineapple racing and get a nice street port though.

Not necessarily. If he got all the [minor and inexpensive] internal mods done to his motor that I had done to mine (see sig), then I (and Dave at KDR) expect it to last over 100,000 miles. Note that I do not run 15 psi daily, more like 13.

Some of you guys crack me up w/your theories on rotaries and blown motors. If your original motor dies (as this one did) b/c of coolant seals, then it's not really your fault. Any subsequent motors, and the blame lies with the driver.

Want your 13B to enjoy a long and healthy life? Warm it up, cool it down, feed it 93, make the proper fuel upgrades, tune it for 11s a/f ratio, keep the motor cool, use quality oil and change religiously and frequently, check the oil every time you get gas, etc etc.

If that's too much work, go buy a Honda. My CRX requires almost no maintenance. But my abundance of testerone requires a bit more on the weekend. Hence, 368 rwhp packed into a 2690 lb rocket

Hey buddy,
I'm also sorry to hear about your car
I just got my car a couple months ago and I've had a few little problems and I freaked out I can't imagine if I blew the motor

My motor had the same problem with the o rings as yours and I decided to have it rebuilt.
The reason for this is that you can do a streetport and you have your original engine and you know how it was treated....
I've heard that SOME remans have problems and there is only a warranty on the parts...If you get a rebuild there is a warranty on parts and labor and you can do a streetport.
If your rotors and rotor housings are in good shape I don't see why anyone would pick a reman motor over a rebuild.
good luck with it and I'm pretty confident in my advise to get a rebuild since I just had it done I had to make the same choice as you about a month ago.
I thought about it for a little and the reman just doesn't make sense to me at all.

I am thinking of gettng a rebuild from someone like Pineapple racing or KD Rotary....Was considering a small street port....those of you with mild street ports, is there ever an issue with the stock fuel system...Would much have to be changed in terms of injectors and pump? Also how would this effect emissions? Would like to hear what experiences you guys have had

Thanks

Bummer man. Sorry to hear about that. Unfortunately there is no one in my area that is really good at tuning and rebuilding 7's....so that's why I have to do it myself.

Yuck.......I know the rotary is a pretty simple engine , but I am not sure I would want to tackle that ....but you can always just ship it somewhere

Yo,
I have a mild streetport but also the pettit unlimited boost ecu and I can run 12psi safely on the stock fuel system.
If you don't have an aftermarket ecu I am not sure that you can get any kind of port small or large without fuel upgrades. I think a large port can add 50 or 70 hp but I'm not sure.
If you want to turn the boost to 13psi then you need a fuel pump and 14 and higher you also need fuel injectors to do it safely and not run lean.
As for emissions, I still have my cat in there (I'm getting a midpipe welded in there any day though) and I am running extremely rich because of the pettit ecu.
Another thing to remember is that a port will allow more air and FUEL to flow so you will be using tons of gas and noticeably more because of the port. I am getting very low gas mileage and my hp mods are intake, dp, catback, port, pettit ecu. I haven't hardly boosted yet either because I am breaking in my motor. I can't imagine how much gas I am going to use once I put the midpipe on, turn the boost to 12psi , and actually use the turbos! It's going to be below 10mpg for sure.

I would get the port however, hopefully this rebuild thing won't happen for another 5-10 years depening on how much and how you drive the car. It's worth it now since the motor is out to get it done cheap.

Some very good advise: get on paper the total price that the rebuild is going to cost and the time it will take the shop to get it done and make them stick to that contract and if they don't they are screwed.

good luck man

I have an ECU as well. I assumed the gas mileage would get worse but everything for performance worsens the fuel economy. What about emissions. Did you notice a huge difference in emissions?

Thanks,

P.s. The engine had a little over 77K miles when it went.

Damn! That's right in the range we keep hearing about.
I was hoping you were going to say 125k miles, or something.

I wish I could tell you about emissions before and after the port but I bought the car with a blown motor and the first time I saw it running was after the rebuild and port. I haven't been around that many rx7s...only seen 2 others close up so I couldn't tell you.

Well I am sure the emissions are affected, I just hope the high flo cat can keep them in spec with AZ regulations.

Hey Jack I pmed you already I met you before when I was first looking into getting a rx7 a few months back. Glad to hear you sold the one you showed me. I go to school in Gainesville but I live in clearwater beach near tampa. I'll be up at school in a week so I'll see you then.

mr. jon: good luck with that, in florida we don't have to deal with that **** any more. I never saw the car running without the port but I'm sure like you said it didn't help with emissions at all and I can almost bet my car wouldn't pass right now. I don't really want my car to smell like fuel all the time even if I can get away with it though. It will all be worth it though when I stay up with a sweet car. If you have a problem with your high flow cat in passing the test I can send you my stock cat thats falling apart and making flapping noises

That alright...I will just have to get the street port and if it doesn't pass...well I will just go from there...performance is the most important thing..
