5th Gear Syncros...

I need to replace my 5th gear syncro and was wondering if all the syncros in the tranny were the same. Would a good 3rd gear syncro work as a replacement? Also, I've read there is an updated syncro that is stronger than the original. Does anyone have that part number? Thanks.

I wouldn't want to try it even if it looks close. The synchros are not that much. Why tear- down the tranny even for the relatively simple fifth gear synchro only to find out after the reinstall that it does not work? iluvmyrx7.com should have the part's number for the synchro.

The 5th gear syncro is about $14 from Mazdaspeed Motorsports, figure around $30 from the local dealer.

30 for the part, how much for someone to do it for him? I'd say your looking at 300+ paying someone to do it.

Rotorsports Racing in Kannapolis NC Told me they use TII syncros in FD transmissions. They said the Syncros are stronger and that mazda just lightened up the TII syncro to get it to shift faster. Its apparently a racing trick but it does weaken the syncro when you take some mass away from it. They said the TII syncros in the FD trans will hold up better.
You can call them if you have any questions. www.rotorsportsracing.com 704-933-6222

I still got time to send in the money on that Give a yell when you plan on dropping the tranny, you'll need an extra set of hands or a lift.

Well, it won't be till my engine completely kicks the bucket and that might be a while. It's actually running pretty good since I installed my PFC, considering 102K miles and only 5 good apex seals.

I just did my 5th syncro, ended up having to buy a new 5th, syncro and hub select, cause all my syncros were worn on 5th.

ended up costing me like 300$ from ray at malloy... labor was free

get a bearing puller like the instructions say.

You may not want to wait too long. When I did mine earlier this year, I went to pick the synchro up off the shaft and it fell into three pieces. I'm not positive, but was told that when in reverse, that synchro is unsupported and in my case, could have fallen off into the transmission.
I replaced the shift-select spindle at the same time, I believe both were updated/strengthened and Ray Crowe will have the numbers. As stated above, the parts weren't all that much through Malloy. Just my .02
