5th gear syncro

Is there a way to tell if the 5th gear syncro is cracked, with the transmission out of the car ? Without removing the rear tail piece ?

I removed the pan off the btm and there is NO pieces of it there, looks clean. I want to make sure and MIGHT pull the tail piece off if I cannot find a better way

thanks

if it's cracked, you'll know it's cracked.

when mine was going i could already feel a little grinding when putting it in gear. when it was totally killed i couldn't even get into gear...

rephrase that: take the tranny apart and inspect the gear, or if you bolt it up and try it out LOL

the first one is probably your best bet... since the 2nd option will mean you have to do option 1 if it is in fact broken

i saw a how to guide, with pictures...somewhere around here...

---edit---

here's the guide:

I've taken apart a couple that didn't have a 'bad' 5th and found a cracked 5th synchro. These are the kind where it would only be a hard shift if you hurried it.

I am taking it apart - thanks for the reponses. The answer to my quesion is - No, you have to take it apart or take a chance. Better to crack it open and see.

Yeah, mine was completely severed thru in one spot but you couldn't by looking at it. You had to physically pull on it and see that it would separate. Of course I knew it was bad because it wouldn't shift into 5th.
