Max: I think he might have ment that a FMIC will cook a motor because of inferior airflow over radiator. Just a thought.
Just my .02 didn't want to start the SMIC FMIC debate on this thread. Anyways, good luck with your car jason, make sure to keep us updated with the progress as well as some pics and dyno sheets when it is up and running.
Max, did you ever dyno your car on another dyno other than XS? What AFR's did they tune your car at? How has your car held on the track aside from the wastegate sticking?

they put on your M2TWINS. and your car ran like ****.
and you had alot of negative things to say. THEN
you took your car back to them??

turbo kit, injetors, fuel rail, motor mounts this and that
GEESUS.. it adds up fast..
WISH there was a GOOD rotary shop in teh DC area.
OTher than PFS.. Granted Deee is local, but he doesn't
have his own shop yet and always backed backed backe

yeah i had reservations....but i listened to people like ****...and the guys at rotary reliability and racing who said that xs does a great job with the dyno (bullshit is a good word for how they did on the dyno). anyhow...i was told that xs had cleaned up their act and that they would do a fine job. my afrs they gave me...and my timing maps show exactly how well they did. I got fukked.
rotary reliability letting my car go with only six's fpr compressoin is just as bad though. It was a brand new motor...it came back from xs with six for compression on booth rotors...and they shipped it to me like that. within four thousand miles the motor was pretty much gutless. bad compression will do that...some poor tolerances on the side seals also help.
I get the car tomorrow...will be dyno tuning as well. thankfully this tijme i have people that i trust working on it.

That was kind of funny to read. Without making this a FMIC vs. SMIC thing I have two possible observations of XS (this of course assumes what people have said in this thread is accurate). The first is that either XS are complete halfwits and don't have a clue about intercoolers, as seems to be supported by Corky Bell, an infinitely more reputable source for turbocharging and intercooler information than any RX7 tuner period. The second is that they lack morals and lie to their customers to get their money, sell them products. I can't tell which is the case.
As I just explained to someone today in fact, to "support" horsepower there are three primary factors, core height relative to charge passages. 2. input / output tube diameter. 3. core thickness (has the same effect as core height).
There are other smaller issues such as number of bends and radius of bends etc. in the overall system, turbulent flow blah blah.
I don't know what the dimensions of the XS front mount are that they tried to push on you but there's an extremely good chance that it actually has less flow and "supports" less horsepower because it's a shorter core with less charge side passage volume.
I use quotes on "supports" because it's a made up BS myth someone came up with to sell products. The truth of the matter, eventhough it doesn't help sell my product is that you can still generate high horsepower on a crappy intercooler but you'll need a higher pressure, more backpressure, higher temp blah blah to do so. Look at the Buick Regals for good examples. I have a friend with a twin turbo staged block Grand National with a smaller IC than my large that puts out over 700hp, I think it's actually well over 800 now, but he does it at 29psi + of pressure. He would ceertainly improve things with a better IC but that's not the point. The "supports" term is laughable.
As for dyno tuning, I certainly agree it's far from ideal for turbocharged intercooled cars, what Steve Kan does is the ideal method for tuning but unfortunately it can be risky to him and isn't legal with respect to traffic laws. Don't read anything into my risky comments etc. like I said his method is the ideal, it's the way I do my own (when it was together). I would say dyno's are as much about bragging rights as attempting to truly tune a car well.
In closing I'll even concede that a FMIC has an advantage in the static environment of a dyno but if you bought an IC based on how it works on the dyno you need your head examined.
