No argument
The Auto 3rd Gen uses a Mazda R4A-EL, which is variant of the Nissan RE4R01A. Its a electronically controled 4spd with lockup torque converter and OD
This same tranny is used in the Mazda MPV Minivan, and 929 Sedan. Not exactly the performance minded A/T.
If you listen real quite after KO (Key ON) you can hear any Auto FD let out a muffled scream ala Nancy Kerrigan......

Ex fd *****
Don't let them scare you - While the AUTO fd is a dog off the line - for Hwy cruising its fine and has great Roll On aceleration,, If you use the HOLD button to force the 4>3 kick down it shifts quicker than you could do the 5>4 on a manual. It also Holds boost better during UP Shifts. it is strong enough for a mildly modded motor and I even Road Race mine!

Ok the auto's arent that bad, but if you havent made a car purchase yet and your serious about performance, there is no question....get a manual.
If you already have a nice auto FD (as I do). Wait for the tranny to give out and do a 5spd swap.
I'm not one of these automatics can not be sports car freaks, but the auto in the FD just plain sucks ***. And severly hampers the "moddability" of the car. Its generally accepted that a stock auto FD tranny will fail around 300-350rwhp
And its too expensive to modify/improve the weak points (rear end gears, Torque converter, gear ratios)
There is very limited aftermarket support for the Mazda R4A-EL.
Do a search, there's countless people who dump thousands in mods and can barely muster stock 5spd 1/4 mile times.
Cheapest route:
Rear end gears (4.33) $500 + $500 install = $1000
Torq. Conv (higher stall) $500 + rebuild stock tranny $2000 = $2500
Install labor $1000
Total = $4500
Full on route:
Rear end gears (4.33) $500 + $500 install = $1000
Level 10 Performance rebuilt $3300
Torq. Conv (higher stall) $500
Install labor $1000
Total $5800
Auto to 5spd swap:
Parts (collect your own) $1000
Labor $1000-1500
Total = $2000-$2500

I would suggest keeping away from it. i hate mine. My car is a 94 with 85k on it and the tranny is trashed. Slips all the times. I can't stand when it shifts. if your looking for a good daily driver i would suggest it. If you plan on doing anything to the car get a manual. I regret settling with an auto. The car has simply been a nightmare the past 4 months. Problems out the ying yang!

when you say slipping are you talking about a non-abrupt gear change that seems to slide like a worn manual clutch does. i tried to drive an auto and use the hold button in first then as i hit the red line would manually go to second- the change was not abrupt but sort of took awhile...is this slipping?
thanks
