3rd gen specs - another good source

Hey 3rd gen owners,

Thanks everyone for sending me over to http://beyondtheredline.fd3s.net for good rx7 info.

Here's another site I found with good info:

http://www.nutsandvolts.com/rx7/specs.asp

My website's looking good, but I still need info on those rarer models rx-7s - like the 1st gen Jspec turbos, speciality 3rd gens (besides Type R) & rarer 2nd gen models like the Turbo II verts.

Thanks

The Type R wasn't a specialty 3rd gen and has always been a standard production model in the Japan line-up. Some specialty models include Australia SP RX-7, the 1996 RS-R, the 2001 RZ(other year RZ models were part of the standard lineup), the Bathurst R and now the Bathurst. The last year 2nd gens also had an Infini IV model.

Also - what year was the minor redesign & additional ~20HP?

Thanks

There were 2 minor updates/redesigns. The first was for 96-98 models(also referred to as Series VII). With the redesigned Y-pipe and intake ducts, most of them were rated at 265 except the auto(Type AB) which was still 255(referencing my '96 RX-7 catalog). Some subtle changes were a new rear wing design, 3-circle rear taillights, and dual oil coolers/R1 lip became standard on most every model(auto being the exception). New 17inch wheels were also first introduced on a model other than the RZ which were a new 5-spoke design. The RZ since '93 had traditionally used mesh-style 17inch wheels. ECU was replaced by a 16-bit unit.

A special limited model was made, the RS-R, based on the Type RS. It had some RZ features and can be distinguished by its yellow color along with black colored 17inch 5 spoke wheels.

Another redesign occurred in '99. At first, just the RS model got the new, revised turbos which upped the hp rating to 280. New front fascia, new rear wing, new 16inch wheels, new 17inch mesh wheels along with lots of other updates(bigger radiator, revised ducting, revised turbo control system, etc.). Looks like in 2001 the Type R model then got the better turbos as well. Other models(like the Type RB) with the older turbos were still rated at 265hp.

The RZ made a return as a LE only with just 175 made in white. Of course, it had the better turbos as well as other weight reductions/special features.

Probably best to seperate US-models from non-US models. The Type R has been a standard model in the japan lineup since the beginning. In fact, in '92 there were several different Japan models such as the Type S, the Type R, the Type X, and the RZ model(intro'd in late 92 as an ultra-lightweight/stiff suspension/racing model)

There's actually no such as a Sunburst yellow, carbon-tone cockpit Type R Bathurst RX-7. There was no additional weight reductions on the Bathurst models over the standard Type R. The Type R Bathurst is only available in 'pure white', 'innocent blue mica', silver, red, and black and never had any carbon-tone cockpit. It does have height adjustable dampers.

Earlier, there was a Bathurst R model(based off the Type R as well) which was a special LE production of 500. It didn't have any weight-reductions over the standard Type R but it did have the carbonfiber cockpit as well as the height-adjustable dampers. They're no longer available and were made in 3 colors: Sunburst Yellow, Pure White, and Innocent Blue Mica. Most people seem to confuse the Bathurst and Bathurst R models.

You can get information on current models from Mazda's Japan website, http://www.rx-7.mazda.co.jp/ Another way to get good info is from collecting Japanese RX-7 brochures like I do

JspecFD,

I'll try to compile this into both table and model description format.

You just reminded me I have to classify the engines by Series I-VI as well (the chart's getting large).

Good info all around. Does the 3rd gen coffeytable book or another website have most of the 94+ info as well?

I'm getting a big fat 0 on the 12Aturbo 1st gens in book format.

thanks

Thanks.

Wonder if anyone's converted to the last series engine in the US? I'm assuming you'd need a haltech and some very precise tuning

No, it wasn't. The PEG/Touring was unavailable in '95. The PEP was added in '94 and only has *some* of the features that a Touring/PEG has. It was continued as an available option package in '95. (References: 1994 and 1995 Mazda RX-7 US Catalogs). PEG and PEP packages are different packages and should not be confused or interchanged with each other.

The '94 Touring/PEG was also unique in that it came with a glass moonroof(every PEP and '93 Touring had metal roofs)

@#$^(*)@#$@#$

JspecFD,

Glad you know about the 3rd gen glass moonroof. I've been researching which package the 2nd gen glass moonroofs came on (only avialable 1 year OEM, the rest were dealer options). I have the part # but not which year & which package for the 2nd gens.

Were there any rare dealer options in the 3rd gens? For example, the 2nd gens had a 2+2 both OEM earlyon and dealer option later, 2 tone paint, glass moonroof, rockguard paint, Area A & Areo B bodykits, moonroof windguard, different Mazdaspeed spoilers, etc..

Thanks

BTW - THERE ARE MOONROOF WINDGUARDS available for the 3rd gen sunroofs. Go get one NOW!!!! from Mazda (love how it looks on my TII).
