alright searched around might not of searched hard enough cause im bout cashed out for the night but im thinking about buying this 3rd gen in my buddys neighborhood...not sure if its running or not kinda hoping not so i could actually afford to get it, but how much ball park would it cost me to have it rebuilt assuming it was shot, and how problematic are these compared to the 2nd gens?i havent had really any issues with mine accept for TPS adjustments here and there.. i know its around 900 to have my 2nd gen rebuilt but i know nothing about the 3rd gens accept for them being sex on 4 wheels

 

Rebuild prices will always depend on what needs to be replaced.
A an engine rebuild including new housing / rotors / eshaft is obviously going to be more expensive then just having to replace a few seals.

As far as problems go, its pretty much the same as any other rotary but with more vacuum hoses etc to go bad. Do your maintenance, oil, coolant, plugs and also check over the cars hoses evey now and then and you should be sweet.
Other then that, detonation will kill any rotary. So if you keep up with maintenance and have a good tune theres no reason it cant be reliable.

 

Step away son... step away. This is not a cheap car and it's going to cost you closer to $5k for a rebuild.

If you don't have a minimum of ten grand available to throw at the car right after you buy it, don't bother.

Seriously OP. If you can't afford to buy the car unless it's broken than this isn't the car for you.

And a quality rebuild (that won't need to be "fixed" soon after) is gunna cost you at least $3k on average.

well its gonna kind of be a little project while im on house arresst for the next year so i wont be driving too much anyways and i got 3 roommates that can run me anywhere i need to go sp wont take me long to come up with 10 grand

 

How long has it been sitting? When I blew mine, left it sit for 3 years so I could save up some money for it. Ended up costing me $7K+ to get it on the road again when it was all said and done.

I have since spent around 2k keeping it going, minor upgrades, maintenance, fixing misc, etc. So, yeah $10k in the bank on top of whatever you buy the car for sounds about right if the car is otherwise in good shape. That is, provided you are going to leave it stock. You will need much more if you are going to be modding it.

 

i talked to the dude today, its sitting till he can get the money to rebuild its been sitting for 6 months wantin 7500 to sell if someone offered he said..i got 5 so thats out the question for now im either gonna continue saving for running fd or rx8 probably thanks though guys

 

Whoa whoa....come on...

$5k better be one special rebuild. My half-bridge with new housings rebuild cost less than that. Pineapple is less than $4k. CPR less than $3k. If you're mechanically inclined, a rebuild kit from Atkins is about $1500.

Seriously...it's not all THAT bad. It depends on the condition of the car.

However, OP, if you're hoping it's NOT running so you can afford it, then you don't need/want it. It's going to end up sitting somewhere rotting away if this is the concern you have now.

EDIT....of course I see that you're not getting it, however, the same applies.

When I got mine, I spent $0 on it to keep it running. ~87k miles on it at the time. Upgrades not included, there hasn't been much in terms of things breaking to keep it running. I think the only problematic thing was a bad coil and a headlight motor. Of course, once those upgrades start, all bets are off.

 

well my reason for wanting to get it blown was because i wanted to have it rebuilt if the price was right or have a learning experience and rebuild it with a friend of mine that knows rotary, so that way i could start with something fresh rather buying one for 13k+ and not knowing if its gonna blow up the week after i buy it

 

^ Compression testing and good tuning will take a lot of that "guess work" out of the equation.

Well if you're sitting for a year on house arrest, the FD is an excellent project car. It'll keep you busy like no other! There are endless things that need attention. I think most people spend more time working on their RX7 than driving it. I know I always have with every RX7 I've ever had, or any friends have ever had. It's too bad the money isn't working out. Maybe you could buy an FC or something?
