Hello,
I am buying a 3rd Gen rotor from someone- What should I inspect for to verify that it is genuine and good?

Rust is an obvious one. Looks for grooves on all 3 sides that could have been created by a blown apex seal. Anything that can catch your finger or more than 11/2 inches long is considered no good to me. Check the slot where the apex seal sits in; check to see if it resembles a sort of upside dow V... like this.. / \(exhaggerated). Check the tips of the the slots for the apex seals... where it meets with the corner seals. check to see if the tips have been somewhat "bent" in or "too" dull. Uhmmm that's all I can remember checking on my rotor visually. Unless you bring a feeler gauge and an outside micrometer... I think that's most of it. I'm sure I left something out... someone chime in!

Kevin Landers outlined some differences in both rotors and housings here. The thread is linked from the FAQ:

E
Engine Housing / Rotor information, weights, interchangeability:

The Mazda workshop manual lists tolerances as well.
