3rd Gen Owners

A question for all you very fortunate 3rd gen. owners. I was browsing through some of the 3rd gen. archives the otherday and I was blown away by the amount of people that own FD'S that are only in their early 20's or younger. Especially those who have owned them since highschool or that have them while attending college/university. I am 20 years old now, I own an FC and go to university full time. I have a very decent
paying summer job and there is NO CHANCE in this world that I could EVER afford an FD in the next 3-5 years, NO CHANCE! So, I guess my question is..... to those of you who fit this age catagory and are going to school, do you have you car payed off or did you just take out a loan for it?

Thanx

I have the car payed off and was very fortunate to get one. Lets just say that I was blessed beyond what I was worthy of. I had very very good stocks and took out some money for the car. Something that I have always wanted and so I dipped into it a little and bought the car.

I took out a loan. But my parents pay gas, insurance, and most of the matienance bills. Which leaves me paying just the loan. Without there help there is no way I could ever afford the car.

I'm an 18 and a freshman in college BTW.

I paid for it in cash. I'm a full time student as well. I just saved money for a loooooong time.

All I had to do was work summer and winter vacations full time, and go part time during school.... the other thing is be stingy. Find a girlfriend thats understanding, or dont have one at all. In about a year and a half you can have enough money for one hehe.

Loan and pay for everything else too. I am a senior so my schedule allows me to work full time.

Worked 2 jobs, went without a car for a year, and saved. It took me a year and a half to find the right FD, but when I did .. I paid cash. Along with everything else I've done to that car. All worth it!

When/If times get rough, I park it and start walking again.

My advice, start saving and don't even start looking for an FD until you have at least 10 grand. It will be next to impossible to get a loan on a 10 year old car. It was hard enough 2 years ago. Most banks won't even consider it on a car over 7 years old.

Good luck! If it's your dream to own a 3rd gen ... don't give up!

I sold my previous car for exactly what I paid for it ($6000), and had the other $3000 in the bank. I picked up my FD for $9000 - but then I had to put a lot more money into it in the last year. I just work as hard as I can, and take care of the problems as they come. My car is 100% paid for, but the repair bills keep coming.

I feel your pain Sprockett. I've been fixing problems on this car since I bought it. However, I'm happy to say there are no re-occuring issues.

I work full time and go to school full time, I got a loan about a year ago for the car, I pay almost $900 a month in car payments, gas and insurance. The key is to live at home it free's up a lot of money.
I am 20 right now.
I pay for everything though so I don't have a lot of extra cash, so upgrading takes a long time. . . .

You know, my hat is off to you younger guys that realize their dream car.
When I was your age, I HAD to have a Jaguar XKE. I lived and breathed and worshipped that car.
And as fate would have it, one was almost dumped in my lap. The Vice President of the Coleman company in Wichita, Ole Oltjenbruenner had a '73 XKE Mark III in storage. Took me for a ride, offered to sell it to me for $10K. This was in 1977. I tried EVERYTHING to get this car. But being only 17, EVERY loan institution wanted a co-signer, and my dad was having none of it.
Wise move on his part, likely!
Anyway, I have yet to buy my XKE. I've owned something like 21 cars in my life, but not the Jag.
Someday, though.

But yeah, kudos to you guys that get an FD at a young age.

I've had a job since the 5th grade. Of course, I haven't saved any money. I have a loan for my FD, I am VERY lucky and my parents pay for my insurance. I pay for everything else though, including the $30-$40 a week I spend on gas. I also have an 85 Fiero GT (first car) that I drive daily to college and back. As far as paying for it - I spend more than half the money I make each month on the car payment, and it is worth EVERY penny! I bought it last year when I was 18, I'm 19 now.

My FIRST car (that I bought for myself) was a 66 Series 1.5 (4.2L) E-type that I bought for $1750 in 1974. Paid for it with money from my first job ( 3.75/hr ) and had to sell it when I went away to college in 1976 I regretted selling that car for a LOONG TIME (still do a little) BUT now the FD is my compensation

I got my FD a year or so ago after having been working in the Computer field for a couple of years. Being single then, I made a lot of money..so I bought it. All paid off already.

I am 18 and am working on purchasing one right now. I'm taking a loan out, and I have to pay for everything. Car, and insurance. My insurance is going to be $241 a month.

Oh man...... If there has ever been a better looking car made than the early series XKE Jags (with the covered headlights) I don't know what it would be.
Except maybe the FD, the Lamborghini Miura SV, and a handful of other exotics that normal people could never own.
You were ONE lucky man, Max!

Yes, us old guys are in awe of the Jag. I wanted one real bad out of school. Got a 79 RX-7 instead. Yea the FD is awesome as well. There was a thread on the forum that had a car show that Jay Lenno was at...man, talk about awesome cars. I believe the Miura was in the pics along with an Isso Griffo (spelling??)

BTW - there is a perfect V-12 XKE that is on the show circuit in the DFW area. So if any of you live around Dallas and want to see one that looks as good as the day it was made (better actually) send me a PM and I'll let you know when the next show is in Grapevine.

im 19, payed outright for my seven, as well as 7200 for motor/ ecu right after i got it. from then on, i didnt work and slowly i pay for stupid mods because ebay rules!.

ive had my fd for a year now (longest ive ever owned a car) and it has been in the shop for half that time. it is possible to afford such a car while being a full time student, you just need to be more creative.

this has also been my cheapest car so things were payed off from sale of my last car, and then some.

im 23 Paid cash for my FD 2 years ago. Still working on my Degree. I have to say i was blessed with income from Djing, otherwise i wouldnt have been able to get it.

Though is a money pit and there is always something to fix, driving it around is the best part of my day!

My advise to you is that if you are struggling to save enough money to have one, chances are you are going to struggle to keep it as well. Its an addiction, not only to upgrade it with performance stuff but to keep it alive as well. FDs are vehicles that have got to be upgraded in order to maintain their reliability and to keep them on the road.

Maintance, parts and performance upgrades dont come cheap and is best to have a daily driver if you own an FD. That way you can troubleshoot your car if anything goes wrong, unless you save enough to buy a single turbo RX7 which is what i recommend for those who are struggling to save for one. It will be all your money's worth since it will come with less problems and hazle than the stock if it was built properly.
