3rd gen cigarette lighter(what wrong with it)

I was pumping gas last night at a local gas station and I let some people check out the insides of my car. Somebody pushed in the cig lighter and when I started the damn thing shot out and burned the hell out of my hand. I jumbed out the car screaming "****" (the car was rolling) thinking I was on fire I burned a hole in my friends $450 northface jacket. I have never felt as much pain. Anyways How can I fix my lighter so it doesnt shot fireballs at me

Arrow Get rid of it!!

Sorry, that is just so out of the ordinary, attack of the killer lighters!!

Shouldn't be smoking in your FD anyway so you can replace it with one of those 'Do Not Smoke' inserts.

If you are insisting that you have a lighter anyway, you just need to replace the one that you have. The spring that releases it is worn and it is probably just at that point where it did release once the lighter was too hot. That and with too much use the expansion of the element due to the heat can widen out the lighter hole making it so the spring can shoot the lighter out. If the hole is the problem, you can probably guess the fix. Either get an aftermarket piece that is larger or you can do some damage to the lip of your to give it some resistence so it doesn't fly out and attack you.

Mine was bad so I replaced it too, works fine, keep it in the glove box just in case but I have a 'No Smoking' insert.

You can get the original from a junkyard or the dealership. Not that expensive if you absolutly must have one. Would recommend the dealership for a replacement since I haven't seen an FD that had one that still worked correctly that was original.

Arrow Auto Part Store

You get them on that 'Remedy' rack in the auto part stores. Sure that Napa has them, probably AutoZone and other cheesy place to get cheap stuff like Wal-Mart and Target. The 'Remedy' rack is all that univeral crap that a company sells like window cranks, fuzes, ***** and other stuff. I got my insert off that rack. They had generic lighters and the No Smoking insert also.

If you can't find one there, just wait until someone you know rents a non-smoking car, it will have one in it also.
