3rd Gen Alternator, rebuild? replace? Help!!

I searched, but found no help. I had my alternator off the car for about 6 weeks while my UIM and TB were being polished (mad props to Twin Turbo Teddy for his awesome work!)and I did the silicone vacuum hose replacement. Now my accessories (radio/CD Player)start to cut out after about 20 minutes of driving. I had the battery tested, and it shows to be good, but the alternator is showing to be bad. I checked the belt, and it is new, and tight.

My question is, can I have the alternator rebuilt? Or is it better to replace it? Any idea on the cost of both options? I have the factory Bose system, so I don't need a super heavy duty alternator. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,

David

I've always had my alternators rebuilt. I had one go out on my TII that they tested or replaced the whole thing and it still wouldn't work. Much cheaper to have 'em rebuilt, and they'll work just as well.

I was cautioned against having mine rebuilt from several people...they said it probably wouldnt last too long.. I picked up a factory Mazda alt for like $180 or something...

As long as the stator and elctronics are fine, yuo should be able to just replace the brushes if that is your case, but if not, if you get the alternator rebuilt make sure that you specify that it is a 100amp unit.

I'm trying to find a local shop that can quote me on a rebuild, but while I do that, is my local Mazda dealer the only source for an OEM replacement? Has anyone bought an OEM replacement online? Thanks for the help!

I haven't purchased a new alternator, but I've purchased several OEM parts from Mazdatrix:

They even do next day shipping. Never had a problem with anything purchased from them.
