Question 3rd gear engin break - Shift Leaver hopping.

I have been experiencing the problem below from when I had my FD.

Shifting gears has always been without any problem from when ever I had my RX7. The only strange things happens when I engine break on 3rd gear. If my hand is on the gear lever I can feel it hopping slightli up and down in a circular motion starting from the palm of the hand to the fingers. More important is that this happens only when the speed is reduced naturally due to the engine breaking. At a high speed, engine breaking in 3rd gear does not result in the gear lever hopping.

I asked this question before and have followed all the various suggestions checking everyone with my specialist. Here is what I did.

Checked, opend the gera box - everything is in place.
Checked the differential bushings - good as new.
Checked both engine mountings - been substituted when engine was rebuilt.
Checked the power plant frame for cracks more than once - nothing found.

This is the only problem that I have not yet managed to solve. I would really like to get rid of it but I am out of options. My mechanic tell me that it is nothing to worry that much about. Even if I still would like to get rid of it I have to say that the problem did not vary, during all this time syntomps remained exactly the same.

I am open to any other possible suggestion to eliminate this problem. Thanks very much for the help.

Replace the shifter detente springs. It's easy, cheap, and may improve shifting in general.

Unfortunately, the other possibilities are a bent shifter fork or a bad 3rd synchro. Those two options require a full rebuild.

BTW, engine braking is a much nicer thing than an engine breaking. I was a bit concerned at first

Thumbs up

Just forgot to add that I here know sort of strange noises form the gearbox and the shifting is regular in all gears. Maybe just the second gear is a bit harder than the others. so I do not think it's a bad 3rd synchro problem.

Thanks for the suggestions dgeesaman. I will certainly check on what you told me.

Most of all thanks for the breaking note if I could I would endit it. All falt of my fast typing and no checking.
