3K hesitation / bucking

Sup fellas,

I just bought another FD this past weekend (my second one-first one was back in 99 and sold it in 2000).

I understand about the 3K hesitation but sometimes I get a real wild one- bucking, usually in 2nd or 3rd gear. I know I need a better ground etc. But does it get really bad where it bucks and the car jerks. Is this a normal 3K hesitation or is it something else? I don't remember having this on my old one...

Thank you very much in advance !!!

Does it go away as the car warms up?

I'm having a similar issue.... but form 2k to 4k. kinda feels like it's leaning out, i was thinking maybe the fuel filter was at fault, but I did that yesterday and it's something else. the problem just started developing in the last 500 or so miles... help would be much appreciated.

Good point Mahjik...
It's just not as bad (bucking/jerking) when its fully warmed up. But it does goes away (bucking/jerking)after driving 8-10 miles or so.. I mean you can still feel the hesitation but it's not as bad...

You might start with checking the thermal wax rod operation.

Check page F-79 in the FSM. It has the procedures for testing and setting the fast idle cam.

i had the same problem and it was caused by a boost spike, which will cut fuel to the car for a second....was a definate bucking

I used to get a hesitation at about 3500rpm under full throttle in 4th and 5th... but I guess carbon had an effect, because I don't drive mine hard often, so after I took it out the road for a bit, it went away...

I forgot to mention that the car does Boost Spike...

But I'm curious if the hesitation caused by the boost spike???

It spikes between 12-13 with a stock ECU and these mods:

Fluidyne Aluminum Radiator, Aluminum AST, M2 dual tip Cat-Back, Tripoint High Flow Cat, Gutted Pre-cat, M2 9.5 lbs Flywheel, M2 Under-Drive Pulleys...

Thanks!!!!

The fact that you're getting fuel cut from the boost spike is good. It's the only thing saving you from destroying the engine.

Get a boost controller installed and set for 10psi. That should eliminate the fuel cut and it's resultant bucking.

That depends on if the hesitation is coming when you are hitting 12-13 PSI or not. If the hesitation is happening earlier then it's not fuel cut. Fuel cut is more than a hesitation, so I don't think that's what you are seeing. That is unless your idea of "hesitation" is different than mine.

The hesitation is coming in waaaaay before boosting that high,... it sometimes happens when I'm not even boosting....

I really appreciate all your guys' inputs!!!

I'd like to know how this turns out, I have some hesitation as well but haven't tried adding a beefier grounding strip yet. I remember reading somewhere that the second turbo starts spooling up at 3k rpm...And fully engages at 4.5k rpm. Could the smooth transition into the second turbo be blocked or hindered in some way, causing a short loss in power (the hesitation)?

Check your grounding points. I added an extra 4 points in the engine bay and cost next to nothing to make. Problem went away straight away.

I noticed that my negative battery terminal was loose. I replaced the terminal post as well as the ground wire from the battery. It helped a lot as the bucking is not as wild or hard. You could tell that the hesitation is still there but it's not as bad. I will try to add at least two more ground wires from the engine and see if that helps. BTW, mine happens between 0-5 psi of boost between 2.8K - 3.5K on second and third gear...

If that doesnt work, then someone mentioned adjusting the TPS and changing the O2 sensor...

I'll be adding the ground wires this weekend...

Thank you!

ground wires MIGHT smooth out a mild hestitation but your tps is probably bad or out of wack.

good luck

I added two more ground wires and it's still there....

But it somewhat goes away or it's not as bad when it warms up, you could still feel a hint of it after driving it for ahwile....

Gotta try adjusting the TPS next time
