Penzoil 20w50 here in Jacksonville, Florida. Although i changed to 10w30 since the weather has been dipping to the 40* mark, and i do most of my driving coming home from work late at night/early morning.

I'm running Castrol GTX 10w-40 (Drive Hard) year round. I'm also running Protec-R fuel additive. If someone could please fill me in on the problem with running Castrol I would appreciate it. I'm also curious about this 10w-40 problem. Why is it so much better to run 20w-50?
I believe 10w-40 is a mutligrade oil which doesn't burn as well (can't remember correctly, so someone correct me if I'm wrong). If you do a search for "10w-40" you'll find some VERY long threads about oils.
It's never fast enough...

10W-40 has a long reputation of being shitty oil. The explanation that I read was that the amount of viscocity enhancers needed to make the 10-40 jump resulted in the oil having other poor qualities. Notice that NO car manufacturers recommend 10W-40 for their recent cars. I don't know if 10W-40 is still ****, but I don't see any reason for me to find out. 10W-30 works great in colder climates and 20W-50 is great for warmer climates.
Other "oil stories" which may or may not be true:
- Pennzoil and Quaker State are **** oils. I've heard lots of bad stories about Pennzoil in particular.
- Castrol may swell seals and does a poor job of reducing engine wear.
- Mazda recommends against synthetics because one synthetic did not burn well in the rotary long ago. People have driven zillions of miles with synthetic in their rotaries since then, and most knowledgeable rotary people feel that synthetic is fine for rotaries. The next question is whether synthetic is worth the extra cost when you change it frequently.

I have switched to 5-w50 Castrol Syntec ( I usually ran 20-50 mineral \) for the cold conditions, and my car has never ran better. the engine runs smoother than before and just feels slightly more responsive. along with a smoother pur at idle. anyone else tried 5-W50?
