1993 Rx-7 Blown Motor

Hey guys,

I have a major problem. Motor is giving low compression from one of the rotors meaning rebuild or swap. The dealership is quoting me about 10k for everything including hoses, radiator, motor and labor.

A local sport shop over near me is quoting me 3.5k for everything in. I know this is a no brainer as far as the costs but I want the job done right if I'm going to pay that much.

That's the question...I don't know if I am going to keep the car either. Since I have had this car only misfortune has come my way. I'm definitely willing to give it another try, but if someone can direct me to the least costly and effective way to get this problem fixed please tell me.

I can sell the car as is, but it would definitely be a major loss. I just started putting accessories on the car, it's going to end up in a major loss....make more sense to keep the car and enjoy it but I don't want anymore problems though.

I live in the bay area specifically in the city of san mateo. If anyone knows anybody that can spare a favor as maybe helping me out with this problem I would definitely appreciate it. Maybe someone has a spare motor laying around or someone wants to do the job on the side for cash....my thoughts.

Well, I can tell, I've been there. I did the same thing, $10k to the dealer since I didn't know any better, but that was 5 years ago. I didn't know anything about this forum let alone have a PC at home.

Sorry, I'm not slamming you, but you have found this forum yet you don't have any information about rebuilds?

There are MANY cheaper alternatives then spending the money at the dealer. Just search here on the forum for "rebuild" or "reman".

Personally, you should contact either:

Either place will get you back on the road much cheaper and you'll have a better car in the end.

If you got enuf money or enuf skill to rebuild engines, its not really that bad of a engine to try to get 300-400hp out of, just get a single turbo upgrade as well as the mods to support it and it will be fine. I guess it really depends on what you mean by relible... Most 300-400hp engines dont really last that long anyways, well other then V-8's

Well, heres one option. To save money, you could take your engine out, Drive 10 hours to pineapple racing in Portland, Have them rebuild it, then pick it back up, or just give them the whole damn car. The 20 hours of drive time could be worth quite a bit in shiping. And im sure you could find some reason or another to go to portland or seattle

I agree with the others. A second car is needed. FDs can take a bit of abuse but its no honda. A nice warm garage is nice for an FD most of the time. Sorry about your luck to my friend.

10k ! damn! i'm sure that the place near your house has 5 times more experience w/ rotary then the dealership! they don't know shiet! and the rip you off! i bet they're charging 7000 for like labor and restocking or something! those homos! ahah! but yea i think you should go to the shop near you

That's a typical dealer price (just ask me how I know). It's about $4k for the engine, and they will replace the turbos no matter what so about $3000 for those. The rest is labor.
