1993 Fd Waterseals

Hi, I was looking to buy a 1993 FD but the owner said that the water seals were blown. Do i need to rebuild the whole motor? can I just replace the seals? How much will it cost?

Thanks

water/coolant seals involve rebuilding the whole engine.

cost is roughly $1200 or so if you do it yourself to $2600+ for a shop to do the whole job.

Yeah if you read the guys earlier post he said that the motor overheated, so I would look for a rebuilt engine instead. So since we live in Hawaii might be more like $3k for rebuilt + $1k for install

i was gonna say add on $1k to my figure since you live in Hawaii, prices are always relative to where you are.

Well it might be ok to rebuild you never know until you get it apart.
Even if you gotta get a rebuilt $8k is still cheap for an FD!
Make sure title is clean.

It would be hard to get a straight answer.

You can get a minimum rebuild kit for under $600 from Roarty Aviation. The kit is good and most have had good luck with it.

Odds and ends consumables and gaskets will run you another $200.

If you need something like a rotor or housing, it could be expensive. You will not know what you need until you get the engine apart. These engines will run with minor internal damage. Compression test will tell you something about the engine health.

Hours for the first timer will be excessive. Once you know what to do, I would say you could get it out, rebuilt, and back installed in about 60 man hours.

Cleaning the engine, which is one of the most important factors, is also the most time consuming. It can take a very long time to get everything ready to assemble.

Man, I just went through a full rebuild process. Dude, just be prepared to open up the can of worms considering this thing is a 92' and these motors seem to have a life expectancy of roughly 10 years. Mine is a 94 and I know that on top of the seals/labor, I had to replace one of my rotors, one end-plate, and the housings just to be safe. To me, doing it right the first time you have the motor torn apart is the only way considering the cost and labor involved with tearing it apart again. If you do everything correctly, you will have something comparable to a brand new motor; if you do it the cheap way, it normally bites you in the end. I have already seen it happen a few times. Good luck!
