Hey guys, around here there's a Unocal 76 that sells 100 octane gas. I was wondering with my mods (see sig) getting this gas would be beneficial or just a waste of money. It's like 4 bux a gallon!!!

 

I've been using it for a while now, since they changed the octane from 92 to 91. I fill 5 gallons of 100 and then 10 gallons of 91. That gives me an even 94 octane. You end up spending about $15 more for a full tank of 94. I will probably start using just 91 after i get my PFC and my car properly tunned. Right now I use it as cheap insurance. For turbo cars...the more octane, the better. The only drawback is the hole it will dig in your wallet. It doesn't hurt to run 100 octane every so often.

Also, as a side note...post pics of your car w/ the Work Meister wheels! I wanna see how it looks!

 

If you are gonna be racing it may not be a bad idea to get some, I ran a mix of 104 and 91, (it came out to be ~98 or 99 in the car) a few weeks ago when i went to the track and the car seemed like it pulled harder and my knock readings were lower on the PFC.

 

not true, If your car has proper timing, adding opctane will make you loose power. If your timming is too advance, adding more octane will help with power, and make knock readings go down.

 

Where is this station? I'm in SJ and I've never seen such a thing. Lemme know

go to 76 unocal and search for stores around san jose with race gas. They are the only ones around this area that has it.

Yeah...I'm running 110 leaded race gas from the Sunoco station near my work, the 100 is the same price!?!?! I figured what the heck, I don't have a catalytic converter, I might as well go leaded.....and boy does it smell gooood!

 

Absofuckinglutely right...... For one last time - all high octane gas does is have more anti-knock compounds in it. Period.

I have won more money - and serious money - in bar bets with this one over the years. If your car does not knock you are wasting your money buying it. If your car does knock you better figure out why fast or you will be investing in a new motor in a hurry. Does not matter if it is a Rotary, Boinger or whatever.
Knock kills engines FAST. I'ts like a mini-nuke going off at exactly the wrong time.......the big problem with rotaries is determining when the ARE knocking since they are so freaking quiet to begin with. Even minor knocking will put the hurt on big time.

You can bet when my engine joins the great rotary graveyard in the sky it will be reincarnated with dual knock sensors.

 

guys in SoCal, where can I buy higher ocatane gas at stations?

There is a 76 station here in Pasadena which sells it for $4.50 a gallon. It's on Arroyo Pkwy and Glenarm.

Has anyone used toluene to jack up the octane content of their gas?

 

I knew it was somewhere there!! I remember someone telling me about it! Hey, are you part of SoCal7s? I don't see to many 7s around Pasadena.

Couple of questions...

1. Any places to get racing gas in San Diego?

2. Is the Sunoco 110 racing gas leaded?

3. What would the mixing ratio be when using 110 insted of 100 to achieve 94-95 octane.

I have my stock cat...so I suppose the point is moot if the racing gas is in fact leaded.

Anybody know the answers?

BTW, I did find a place here that will sell you 55 gallon drums of 110 for $4.77 a gallon delivered...or they will dispense it to you in your own container, they didnt say whether it was leaded or unleaded though...

 

The problem w/ race gas is that it will go bad after awhile. While purchasing a 55 gallon drum at $4.77/gallon is a great deal, you have to use it fairly quickly. I don't know that time span that it takes for race gas to go bad...but that is my understanding from the people at VP Racing Fuel. I know VP Racing sells their gas in 5 gallon and 10 gallon drums also. See what type of pricing you can get on that. It may be more useful, although more costly, to you.

 

there is one in west covina off 10 freeway citrust ave exit, it's like $5 a gallong for 100octane gas though

 

Keep in mind guys... running higher octane especially at idle for long periods it eventually will foul your plugs.
Use higher octane for the strip... and when you know you're going to be pushing the car hard.
However for mainly street driving use 92 maybe with some NOS
Octane boost once in a while. "When running 14 pds of boost to
keep those V8's off your butt."
