Twin turbo differences

Hey all currently rebuilding my 97 FD twin turbos & some porting on manifolds .
I had another set of twins from another 97 & once I pulled apart there were some differences on how they came apart, specifically the plate before thrust washer, one had a smaller disc with 3 flat head screws & smaller diameter o ring , the other had no screws & the whole disc came off with a punch on opposite side, bigger o ring .
Both compressor blades seem same size & count with a quick check so far , does anyone know the differences?

Were they both N3C1 turbos? It will be on the secondary compressor housing.

Possible a rebuilder has been through one of them and changed things around. Unfortunately not a lot of knowledge on the guts of the twins and rebuilding them.

Dale
it says “n3c. A”
followed by
”0321”

not sure if there is a “1” after the “c”
the other spare set says “n3c1 4”
followed by
“6318”

1 set had reverse thread front nut other set just normal , both front & rear turbos.

i believe n3c1 is s7 , but the two are different in assembly where front O ring goes.

seems a bit strange

Thanks Dale,
My turbos have the gold coated actuators & I believe may have been a revised later style N3C1 turbos.
Reason for my theory is the spare set of turbos I have came off a 96-97 model & mine is 97,

Can you or anyone confirm if the N3G1 is still a HT12 turbo, are the compressor & turbine same size & what the differences are, is it simply same size but different design/material?

Cheers

The N3G1 has a revised turbine wheel, I think it's slightly smaller but has more fins or something. I THINK the compressor wheels are the same.

Big giveaway is the compressor housing bolts on instead of snap ring and the abrade able seal in the compressor housing - I think there are pics in that thread.

Since you are seeing weird stuff like reverse thread on the compressor nut my guess is it's either been rebuilt or was upgraded by some shop or something. A lot of time has passed since these were new and it's possible someone has got in and played with them.

You may want to reach out to BNR Supercars in Alabama, Bryan there knows these turbos inside and out, he may have some input for you.

Thanks,
Dale

Hey Dale , finally got a reply back from Bryan @ bnr & simply said to ring him & purchase his parts 😀.
Although after reading up on fd turbos from his site I believe I have aftermarket set as left hand thread nuts & also his upgraded

Chra seem similar to mine .
I have re assembled my turbos now anyway & ready fo go , I did cut an O ring for front turbo compressor for extra sealing & replaced what I could , lastly I also smoothed out housings where possible.
cheers
