I was playing Midnight Club: Los Angeles yesterday and I thought, "Why haven't I seen a thread on the RX-7 in video games?"
The things that immediately jumped out at me were the following:
1. The interior model is missing the clutch pedal. They must have used reference photos from an automatic FD.
2. When driving, the power seems to die off at about 7,500 RPM (even fully modified). In my opinion, they should have let it run all the way to 8,000, like in Gran Turismo.
3. The pop-up headlights don't flip up when you press the headlight button, but they do come up in external shots of the car, so the modelling is there, just not reflected in the interior camera.
Anyone else have opinions of rotary cars in video games? I realize that most of the people who write these threads in online forums don't actually own the cars.
Don't play too many racing games nowadays but I remember watching a video of Forza Horizon 4 (I think?) around when they got an RX7 in their update, which has this cool exploded view of the car when you go customizing. Kinda went awry in this case though...
Looks like they skimped too much on reference material... yes, most game developers don't know much about cars.
However, I think Gran Turismo has done a good job with the RX-7 cars. I wish they had done more Premium cars in Gran Turismo 6 (only the '93 and '02 Spirit R FDs have full interiors), but they understandably cut down the total car list in Gran Turismo Sport to focus on quality models.
The RX-7 Spirit R is also available in the Japanese Pack for Assetto Corsa (the original one). It seems to drive realistically – I've kept it at stock settings for now. There is also a modified version of the FD in the pack.
Forza Horizon 3 & 4 are the only games I’ve played that have the FD. What upsets me is that there’s no Veilside Fortune body kit I hope they’ll add that.
GT Sport the Spirit R has garbage brakes and no way to improve them. Other than that it is a pretty sweet car to get in the game, the RE-A version isn't much different either.
The Spirit R in Assetto Corsa is the darling of time attacks, my friend says it drives almost way too good for it to be realistic (which granted it is a video game and everyone's taking it with a big grain of salt) but I was wondering if an owner could comment.
Being a big fan of the FD and from what I played with it it doesn't seem that far off knowing all the stats but it for sure can't compute it being that good to me.
Also, iD: Arcade Stage.
Can't talk about games and the FD without mentioning that.
I'd also like to talk about that, yeah, sure; the FD certainly was one of the poster cars from the Gran Turismo games but unlike the Skyline or the NSX, I'd argue it never really needed a game to become as iconic as it is, imo.
Guess it's a testament to how wonderfully niche it is to have respect outside of that realm even for people who came from the games unlike the R34, no matter how good it was media had a lot to do with it.
You could argue that Initial D helped a lot aswell and it was the Fast and The Furious equivalent to it, but I kind of doubt that.
