Thinking about selling
Thats right. After 14 years with the FD, and 20 years with an FB before, I'm thinking about selling it. Its odd, but it really doesnt give me much pleasure any more. Maybe I'm just getting old. Mostly it sits in the garage. I get it out once a week, so it doesnt sit for extended periods. Starts and runs fine every time. Its around 320 rwhp with an oem cat and smog pump. Working AC. Mods in sig.
The car is in great shape. Around 73K. 11K on a mild port rebuild. Paint is pristine. Same for interior. Runs great. What should I ask for it? I'm in no hurry to sell it .......... if I decide to sell.

My advice is this, take it or leave it of course, back off selling it for a while.. I've become bored with great cars in the past only to sell them then regretting the decision. I think relationships w/ cars are like women, ebb's and flows.

I'll echo SC... maybe spend the next couple months driving it, cleaning it and fixing little stuff - who knows, maybe you'll fall back in love.
But if not, then put a for sale ad up in March/April. No sense listing it in December when 1/2 the country is (supposed to be) buried in snow. As for price, I think $20K is reasonable, but be prepared to take a little less... I'll say the over/under is $18.5K.

Thanks for reopening the thread Rich. Much appreciated
Yeah. it has a sunroof. Chromed factory wheels. Nice aftermarket fog lamps. A Clifford alarm. And a $3K Alpine stereo system that is now 14 years old and still sounds great.
I have not decided to sell it. I dont need the money for anything in particular. Just thinking about it.

Coming from a guy with serious car ADD, I totally agree. Also worthy of note, if you decide in a few years that you regret the decision, they may no longer be affordable. I am also a Porsche guy, and would love to have another air-cooled 911. My first Porsche was a 1970 911T that I bought for $4500 in 2004, drove for a year, then sold for $7500 in 2006 and felt pretty good about myself. A mere 9 years later I would be hard pressed to find a similar driver quality "longhood" 911 for under $40k. I think the FD will eventually have its day and no longer be an affordable classic sports car.

If there is no pressing need, why not table the idea for a while? Give it at least another summer season. Go for a drive down highway 1 and let us SoCal guys know when you'll be in the neighborhood so we can join you!
Rolling down highway 1 through Huntington and Newport beaches may bring back the sense of enjoyment.

i think thinking about selling into winter is a bad idea given emotionally you are currently fulfilled after a nice long summer of enjoying the car. Come spring you will ask yourself what you have done to yourself. You will fight that feeling for a couple years until you buckle and buy another one. Once you do you will realize your original baby was better and you will "make do".

It depends on how you drive the car. I consider highway driving my FD as "maintenance" while the car's actual destination is the track. If you're lacking in good roads in your area, I suggest taking a scenic trip farther out to some of the country's best roads... driving the same roads over and over is bound to create a feeling of routine.

Yeah, you should sell the FD.
Any newer Mazda drives better in normal driving.
I have a 2008 Mazda3 and 2004 RX-8 and they drive better than my FD. Steering feel/response would be the first thing I would pick out.
Unless you want to pick up on 20something yr old guys there is no real bonus to driving the FD around normally.
Now, test FDs performance against the clock and everything changes (and it drives waaaay nicer near the limit than aforementioned Mazda3).

Sell it, and you won't easily find another in nice shape. You can't appreciate a really nice FD until you've been around so many that are banged up, poorly modded, mistreated and basically junk heaps.
If you don't need the money, keep it. These cars are something special and I think the values will continue to increase.
It's human nature, you want what you can't have. And a nice near stock FD is almost impossible to find nowadays---esp in white and with a manual trans.

If we didnt have to go through emissions here, I would try and do the REW swap into a FD.

Nice to see fellow FD owner appreciating the rx8. I drive my wife's rx8 every once in awhile and it drives and handles so much better than my FD. interior a lot better, less rattle and has cup holders. Not as fast but still fun to drive to work.

The FD is a super car and the RX8 is a good sports car. The difference is night and day. Hell my moderately modded track FD would come close to keeping up with the tube framed triple rotor RX8 race car. That's how good this chassis/car is.
DAMN no respect LOL
PS the 1st thing you'd pick out is steering feel? F#CK. The FD has the best steering feel of any car I've ever driven and I've driven caymans, multiple GT3s etc.... UNBELIEVABLE. Your FD needs to get to the shop pronto.
PSS The other great thing about DDing my FD is simply looking at it each time I walk up to it. Yes, in my eyes it's art work or worth owning to simply admire. It's a top 5 car ever made IMO, yes I'm extremely biased but I also feel there are many, many people/owners who don't really understand what they own.

I still like how you sit down in the FD and everything is close to the driver, but the basic driving feel is a 90s Mazda.

I have greatly improved the steering feel of my FD by putting 18x11 +45 up front with 295s and taken the toe in out, which really helped cut the overboosted power steering and made it more responsive.
Still, I much prefer my RX-8 steering feel stock and on the same wheel/tire set-up as the FD.
RX-8 is just a newer Mazda and Mazda has been refining their cars continually with a focus on driver feel/involvement.

Same here. I keep mine in a storage unit and go get it just to race, so it always has a special feel to me.
I wouldn't "waste" the FD daily driving, I don't need an image boost. Might as well get better gas mileage and lower maintenance costs dailying the Mazda3.
When chicks compliment your dirty Mazda3 you KNOW they want the D and don't just have a boyfriend into Initial D.

Sounds crazy but even after 16 years I'm bummed if the weather is bad or there's any reason I can't drive my FD. I just love driving it
The only way to waste an FD is not driving it. IMO it's a drivers car and should be driven/enjoyed as much as possible

One of the things I love about the FD is the dedication and enthusiasm it inspires in the people who still think it is something special.
This leads us to keep racing, modifying and refining the chassis.
I am just saying if the original poster doesn't share our enthusiasm, pass the car along to someone who does
What should I ask for it? I'm in no hurry to sell it
Ask a lot for it, make sure the new owners are enthusiastic about owning it!

The reason those new cars feel like they handle better is because they're heavy and numb and driven by computers. I've got a 2014 mazda3 too and it's a nice little runabout, but comparing it(or your average rx8) to the FD is a joke. You're old. The FD is for bombing canyons, tracks, and highways(not running out for milk).
Don't sell your FD, Adam. Sit on it. Really nice ones are rising in value almost as fast as they're disappearing.
